    Ferns

First play with layers, the two young fern fronds are from the same shot but moved
together and back ground clutter removed thoughts appreciated.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

    Re: Ferns

Interesting shapes, and composition. I also like the green background, but am not sure that the green subjects stand out enough against it? I am a little mystified about what the things are and what they are conveying in that shape ... hmmm.. looks like a half Heart shape. Perhaps if they were red it would really work out!

Also, not sure why, but the subjects look quiet soft on my monitor. Gotta get them sharp, cause it really hurts the pic if not.

I agree that it's soft. The gradient doesn't look smooth (possibly due to saving for web colors or something?). The lighting is way different on both of them which makes the isolation look weird imo. Also, the iso could use some work, but that's minor compared to the other issues.

fiddle head ferns are pretty neat how they unfurl. Never thought of photographing them before.
I will say they don't look soft on my monitor.
I think a vertical format would work better, compositionally, with more lenth to the subjects.

    Re: Ferns

Thanks for the comments, points noted. As this was my first attempt at a layered image, the mechanics of doing that was my primary concern, so attention to composition & iq not what it should have been. The green gradient was an attempt to add a splash of colour to an otherwise bland background . The difference in lighting on the two fronds possibly due to being quite far apart on the source image. The only reason for taking that picture in the first place, was that I was not going to go home with an empty SD card after an unsuccessful attempt to get some shots of our native Fantails ( pretty wee bird, easy to get close to but hard to get a good shot as they are always on the move )

    Re: Ferns

I actually like what you did with the gradient, but I would like to see it done a lot more in this image, the one gradient on the left looks a bit alone. Id surround the entire subject with soft gradient, have only the pitch black in between the two plant stems. I like what you've done here, subject may be slightly soft as well, but pretty dang close, is it majorly cropped, at the minimum focus distance of your lens?
