Yes it is. Due to the beak length, wing tips not having white areas and the bar of black under the being thin.

Re: Fall 2009 Bird ID Thread

Looks like a Female Boat-tailed Grackle, Though could be a juvenile male. Hard to tell without a size reference.

The Birds of North America, http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/spe...s/introduction,

    or Birdwatchers Digest, http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/si...fish_crow.aspx

    are good references

Re: Fall 2009 Bird ID Thread

    Thanks Paul!

They were all over the forest preserve. I thought it might be a flycatcher since I saw one swoop down and grab a bug mid-air.

Fast little buggers, that's my best shot of one of them.

Re: Fall 2009 Bird ID Thread

They are a northern species of warbler and are larger than many others. All warblers are insectivores and can "hawk" insects in flight They are some of the last to leave and first to arrive back BTW.

    White breasted nuthatch?

I think I may have seen a rose breasted nuthatch the same day at the nature center's feeder, but I didn't get a shot of it.
