I'm hoping to have this picture made into a poster for my boyfriends new room at uni. any idea's/tips on improving it using editors, things like the crop and brightness.

I guess he's a member or fan of this club? The image is a little dark, and I might experiment with cropping that pole out on the right. Any reason why you didn't shoot this in color? poster-sized, I think color would be way more dynamic that b&w.

Clone out the lights on the left and the pole holding them up, crop from the top to remove the security camera and sign on the right, crop from the left to remove the pole, clone out the sign remaining bottom left.
