    Brands Hatch

    But without the fence.

Single car shots for fans to get drivers to sign (my wife usually gets the whole grid).
Group shots are more dramatic I think, as they pile into the corner.

These are really nice, Paul. That last one has great colors. I agree about group shots being best. They are much more dynamic. Coming from shooting motrocycles, cars on the track always look so static to me. It's really tough to make them look like they're actually doing something. One exception is open-wheel cars in a corner, where you can see the driver's head looking through the corner and fighting the g-forces.

    Thanks, John.
They didn't suffer too badly from being shoot through a chain-link fence.
I caught a photographer in the second shot taking photos of the cars from behind, into the sky.
Not what I'd be doing with a media pass !

Wow - never would have guessed that you shot these through the fence! What lens?

300mm f/2.8 with 2x TC for the closeups.
Made sure the lens was as close to the fence as I could get.
Here's my shooting spot ... the guy next to me ... and the view at 44mm

    Re: Brands Hatch

The trick to fencing is to shoot wide open with a long lens.
But then there's not enough DoF for the whole car - decisions, decisions.
Oh and John, in the second shot you can see Susie Stoddart in the TV Spielfilm car beginning to lean into the corner

    I see that!

Are you using AI Servo for these or are you pre-focusing? Your focus is really, really nice!

Did you talk to the Pentax guy? I'm curious about how his camera performed for motorsports.

AI Servo, pre-focus doesn't allow me to catch them on a different line, or in a different place.

    Re: Brands Hatch

    Good questions, Paul.
Will you be at Brands Hatch for the DTM race?

    is your lense auto stablized
For sport where you're panning with the subject, you probably don't need IS.
I do things other than sports photography, and decided that IS was worth it.

    BUT yes, it's the 300mm f/2.8 L IS.
The lens I started out with was the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS.
I tried that with the 2x converter and the images were too soft.
So I tried the Sigma 80-400 DG EX which didn't focus fast enough, and IS drifted.
I ended up with the 100-400 L IS as my longest lens, but find it's not wide enough aperture for me - good in sunlight though.

do you use a mono pod
Yes, you can see in the photo I posted a few messages before.

    what iso number
The lowest possible, the get the best image quality.
No higher than 400, 100 if possible.

    what f stop
There is no fixed f stop.
As large a f/number (small opening) as I can get, with the shutter speed I want, for the visual effect I want.
