    Re: evening light

Concerning the light, I think they are pretty good for numbers 1,3, and 4.
2 and 5 you are shooting toward the light and so the beach in 2 and the young lady in 5 are underexposed.
I think fill flash would have helped in 5.

Frog, in the exif for #5 it says
    # Flash = Flash fired, auto mode, red-eye reduction mode

Looks to me like it's just under-exposed overall because of the sky brightness.
This is a photo where a few minutes later the light might have been better.

I think #5 could be a nice picture with a little more flash, in my opinion with her head facing that direction a flash from your left pointing down at about 45 degrees to her would have made a nice picture.

#1 is nice it looks like something you would see on one of those motivational posters.

Paul, but was it the built in flash or a remote.?

EXIF doesn't say, might have been lost by the editing software or may be Sony limitation that it's not there.

Pretty nice stuff. For a #5 type shot, you definitely need a strong light source - and the larger, the better. As is, the lighting doesn't really work for me in that last one.

    Re: evening light

    First of all, nice work.

    # 1 needs to be sharper. I think it can be saved by some simple post processing sharpening. Great color and subject btw, and a very good choice of DOF.

I like #2 the way it is. It is stark, but that's the scene.

The horizon's probably too centered in # 3. I think I would have lowered the angle and gotten more of the pebbles and less sky. Perhaps a very wide angle and in vertical format, so that the bottom rocks are much bigger in the frame.

    # 4 is interesting but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at - the far arm rest, the text on the backrest, ? The near out-of-focus arm is a killer btw -- I wish it was sharp too. Try a very small aperture (f 16 or smaller) on a tripod. Yes is a tad dark but I like the mood that this creates.

    # 5 is indeed underexposed and there is too much negative space that doesn't do much for the shot, even place it (perhaps due to the angle). I do like the pose and expression. Keep working on these (self portraits?), they are very interesting. Successful experiment here, just needs to evolve w.r.t. the technical aspects and the surroundings.
