Canon 2x EF II Extender. So what did I miss ??

OK ! I just bought the Canon 2x EF II Extender for my Canon Xsi 450 Rebel. Excited to try it, I connected it to the body and it fit fine. Tried to connect my lens to the other end and it will not fit. Did I miss some small print in the on-line sales description? :mad2:

I am guessing the answer is that the extender will only fit limited Canon lens or Canon L series.
    Extender Model is 6846-A004
My current lens are a varity of Sigma lens and a Canon kit lens that came with the body.
Is there a listing of lens that it does fit?

I had planned on using it with my Sigma 150-500mm lens for wild life shots.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

One thing to keep in mind about teleconverters, not only do they magnify the view of the lens they are on, the also magnify every defect and flaw in that lens. Canon builds their TC's to fit top quality glass where they will give the most satisfying results. If a lens is a bit soft that softness will be magnified by the TC that is on it.

There are other companies that make TC's that will fit on your lens. Sigma will, as does Tamron, Tokina and Kenko. The Kenko Pro 300 is a well thought of converter. My suggestion however would be taking your body and lens with you to a good photography shop and trying out the TC first. Look at the photos at home and decide if they meet your standards.

I own both the Canon 1.4X EFII and the Canon 2X EFII. I will only use the 2X on my 300 f2.8L and 400f2.8L as I am not satisfied with the results on my shorter L glass it will fit.

Hopefully you bought the Canon TC from a reputable dealer that will either take it back or exchange it for you for something that will work.

Re: Canon 2x EF II Extender. So what did I miss ??

There is a list of Canon lenses that don't work with a TC on the Canon website.
Because of the lens sticking out of the TC it won't work with my 24-70 for example.
Basically any 135mm or longer, except the 135mm 2.8 SF.

The Canon 1.4x and 2x converters are slightly different designs.
In the back of the 2x converter, there's a large amount of space, the 1.4x has the lens almost flush to the body mount. So you can put the 2x on the front of a 1.4x but not the other way round.

Because of the design, it's easier to put a fingerprint on the rear of the 1.4 - I notice I managed that some time this weekend.
