    d90 vs d200

which one wins I can buy a d200 for $650 wanting to know should I buy that or hold out and save up for the d90?

will my 18-55mm lens work with the d200?

Pretty much any Nikon lens will work on a D200. The only Nikons which need "certain" lenses are the D40, D40x and D60. D200 (and D90) can use screw drive lenses also along with the AF-S 18-55.

it depends on what you want to shoot. both have advantages over the other one. it just depends on which you will use more often as to which to get.

You can use just about any Nikon lens on these cameras. Some of them you will have to manually focus. The nifty fifty or 50 mm f/1.8D AF (about $90 new) is like that. But you know what, those cameras have a feature called Rangefinder mode that will light up the focus indicator for you in the viewfinder when manual focus has been achieved.

    [QUOTE]
The biggest advantage the D90 has over the older design of the D200 is the image sensor.
The D90 has a CMOS image sensor while the D200 has a CCD image sensor.

The D90 has much better high ISO performance and Image Quality (IQ) (based on RAW image capture only and no other features) that is rated slightly better than a D300. Oh, you can do video with D90 too. Actually, IQ wise a D200 is on par with D60 since the D200 was first released 11/1/2005.

The D200 has some nice features though. Magnesium alloy body and weather sealing. Max shutter speed of 1/8000. Two to 9 brackets for bracketing exposures (very handy for HDR). Five fps continous shutter release. CF card memory. 150,000 click shutter life.

To tell you truth, I got ...................... both.

I have a pair of D200's and have played around with the D90 for a bit
also. The D90 obviously gives you a little better resolution but it's
not all that different in real world use. It also goes maybe a stop
better sensitivity for the same noise. I.e., you'll probably get the
same amount of noise with the D90 at ISO1600 as the D200 at ISO800.

But the D200 has better build, better weather sealing, seems to be the
more responsive and faster in use and is a more "pro" oriented body as
    opposed to the "pro-sumer" D90

If battery life is important to you, the D90 has that hands down. It
also has the bigger screen, live view, movie mode... I.e., lot's of
    bells and whistles.

If you have a D700, I think you might be happier with the D200 over
the D90. But I also don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

I'm sorry to say that it's really a toss-up, a matter of personal
preference, and only you can decide which body is for you because only
you know what's important to you... Better image quality, LCD screen,
battery life, and bells and whistles of the D90 vs. more solid build,
speed and more pro oriented functionality of the D200.

Online apology for my flippant remark about Dave’s ‘Day job’-he is a public defender lawyer so ten minutes work wouldn’t bring in enough to buy a D3,(possibly not even a disposable film camera). I guess british humour doesn’t translate too well across the pond-sorry!
I’m sure Nikon, Canon, etc. are mainly interested in making as much money as possible in a depressed economic climate. So they try to give added value with as many bells and whistles as they can that will appeal to their core customers-which is amateur photographers. I don’t think it is rubbish to put video in as far as they are concerned. Actually, same goes for us pro newspaper photogs-just not in a plastic camera that wouldn’t last very long.

Cameras are more like computers these days-so buy one, and like David,(Smeaton), says-it will be obsolete within 6 months to a year. But it will still take photos, just not as good as the latest wonder camera. I’ve still got my Nikon D1X-just over 5mp…. obsolete and landfill as far as Nikon are concerned.
It still takes pictures though and I keep it for the backup to my backup. The batteries on it are testament to how far technology has advanced in a few years-they lose their charge really fast compared with the modern stuff.

Off at a slight tangent-I went shopping with my wife yesterday and passing an electrical superstore saw they had 10 mp digi SLR cameras complete with 28 to 80 mm equivalent lens for sale at under £300,(or around $600). No wonder everyone is a photographer now.

Seems David,(Wilton), is going to be using the camera along dusty, bumpy roads. So D200 is the way to go. Now if Nikon could just find a way to stop the rubber grips peeling off ALL their camera models after 2 years…….

I checked out your photo gallery. I really like the blonde girl. You've used bounce flash - as in a lot of your pictures - and it's come out quite well. I think you could do a lot more in a studio or with some interesting available light. With bounce she's starting to get shadows in her eye sockets

There aren't a lot of sports or professional ceremony pictures in your gallery. I think that your main need is for extra speed of the D90. You're working in dark places. Next step with your rock bands is to do photos of them with just stage lighting on a f1.8 lens. You don't need the pro features of the D200 like weather-proofing if you don't take the camera out in the rain.

Reading down the thread there are a couple of things I would like to clarify:

    - the 50mm f1.8AF autofocusses on the D90 and the D200 (some confusion in the wording)
    - the D60 has much better high-ISO performance than the D200 even though it has almost the same sensor because - it has the image processor from the D90/D300. I was amazed the first time I tried 3200 ISO on it
    - I haven't had the rubber grip come off any of my Nikons yet

Not buying any more gear this year. I hope

    Re: d90 vs d200

    Hi all, I'm new.
I just stepped up to a d90 from a d40 (good choice on my part). My dad has a d200 and seemed to do a thorough job comparing them...I don't think there's a whole lot on the 200 that the 90 doesn't have, not to mention the upgrades in overall technology, lighter weight, etc... I do believe it has the same metal interior...read it somewhere.
