New Canon EOS Rebel T1i - Now With HD Video

There have been rumors about a new Canon Rebel DSLR with video for a few weeks now. Last night Canon made the announcement. The new Canon EOS Rebel T1i has a 15-megapixel CMOS sensor and can capture HD video.

That 500D has an amazing feature set for such a low cost camera. Very impressive.
But, I'm curious to see if they tweaked anything with the sensor or anti-aliasing filter to get more resolution out of that 15MP sensor. The tests on DPreview showed that the 50D didn't really record any more real resolution than the 12MP 450D. Of course that is only one test. I wonder what's in store for the 60D next fall.

Re: New Canon EOS Rebel T1i - Now With HD Video

20fps is very slow. There will be very limited uses for that - no sports or motion whatsoever. Nor does the article mention the limitations (or not) on how long a clip can run, which is also important.

Those issues stated, I think that's a pretty cool development in as far as consumer SLRs are concerned. That definitely busts a hole in the market. The appeal to the average (ie, non-photographer) consumer will be massive.

Nonetheless, as an actual photographer, I would've appreciated greater effort on high ISO, noise reduction, rear screen resolution (though the article doesn't mention that either), etc. Stuff that makes my photos better, not an infrequently used, limited gimmick. But I suppose we're only going to see more stuff like this in the future as makers diversify their product lines. Unfortunately, that may force real photographers into a higher price bracket in order to access good photographic features while dodging the gimmicks.

    I thought that a 50D sensor in that 500D package wasn't a bad deal.
Clip length is 4GB file size, equivalent to 30 minutes running at 1080p.
Video speed goes up to 30fps at 720p.

I'll Stick with 2 separate devices. There is something about packing more than one item into 1 package, for example.. printers. I will not buy a mfc printer. I like to replace my items one at a time when I am ready, not replace them all when one needs to be upgraded, or broke.

It's pretty cool to have video recording capabilities in an SLR.

Wow a new model, with HD video - damn, I just got my XSi.
At that price, with all those features, they won't be able to keep the shelves stocked - better order your T1i (500D) now for the May release date ?

A bunch of retailers already have pre-orders for the Rebel T1i (http://www.unwir3d.com/887297/where-...rebel-t1i-dslr)

Surprisingly Amazon won't let you pre-order it yet. Apparently the video capture isn't quite as good as the 5D MKII (20 fps v. 30 fps) but look at the price difference. Looks like a pretty great entry-level dslr to me. Makes me mad that I just bought the XSi 4 months ago

Ditto that. Bought my 1000D/XS in Jan. Oh well...the price for being an early adopter i guess.

Re: New Canon EOS Rebel T1i - Now With HD Video

For $799 body only, I'll be selling my XSi and upgrading. The 15.1 sensor alone is worth it to me, since I can't afford to touch a 50D just yet (nor would I really want to, if I'm going to drop bones on a camera, I'm going for the top, whether I "need" it or not).

I doubt I'll use the video more than once or twice for quick car sound clips, but 720p should suffice considering the last video I was using was out of my Canon 3SIS.

So long as you credit me as the original photographer, go to town with my work. You can't make it any worse.
