    Sunflower & Extension Tube

My yard is still 80% covered with snow, the dirt road I live on has the consistency of brownie mix and we had a snow squall come through today which is why I chose this photo to work on and submit.

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks

    Re: Sunflower & Extension Tube

Gosh you got a stunning amount of detail in there! Most people use macro lenses - it just goes to show what an excellent tool a set of extension tubes can be.

My only suggestions are to get rid of those two tiny pieces of greenery intruding behind the petals and also maybe trim just a smidgin off the top to get rid of the little black triangle. Apart from that though, it's great.

    Cheers

    Re: Sunflower & Extension Tube

You sure did get the detail. What was the light source?
The green bits protruding and the bit of black triangle don't bother me and I think they make it more appealing.

Wow this is beautiful. I agree about the green thing that's behind the flower, thats a bit distracting. but beautiful detail and colour here. Captured perfectly.

the green bits don't bother me, i barely noticed them until it was mentioned.

one thing i would try to do, which i think would make this alittle stronger ( its already great though) would be put the center of the sunflower (where the spiral comes to a point) alittle closer to the rule of 3rds mark in that corner. i think its just a bit close to the frame edge as is.

    Thanks for the comments.

Here are the answers to a couple of questions that were asked about the photo:

This was taken in natural light and the background is unedited. The sunflowers are in my garden and the darkish/greenish background is the edge of the woods about 15 feet away.

Very nicely done, Chris. I agree with Mikes suggestions but other than that this is just perfect. I think your framing of this brings it up to another level.
It takes one heck of a flower shot to impress me and make it to sticky, and this is one heck of a good flower shot.
    Well done.

    Tracer,

Flowers and cars..., so over exposed that it takes a stunner to be worthy of consideration. This is stunning. Most deserving of a sticky. Absolutey well done!

    Re: Sunflower & Extension Tube

Excellent shot. I like it a lot, but at the same time I think that the actual composition could be a little better, specifically, I would like to see more of the top pedal(s). Sharpness is good. I might clone out those tiny white specks. The background is a very interesting graduated green, instead of the usual saturated blue that I've seen in other sunflower images.......

For this shot I was using a Canon 40D with a 70-200 zoom, kenko extension tube (can't remember what size), large aperature, manual focus and a tripod.

In afternoon light, these sunflowers get nice soft front light and woods in the background are in the shadows so no real detail gets recorded, just the green/black hue.
