    Short-Eared Owl - Midwest

I've been searching for these fellas for about 2 months now and finally found two hunting in the same field Friday evening on my way home from the office.

Although I was ecstatic finally finding them (my first), I wish I could have been there a minute or two earlier as one SEO was being chased by about a dozen red-winged blackbirds when I first arrived on the scene with only 40 minutes before sunset. The two owls would occasionally cross paths and would often fly up together in an aggrevated way (missed those shots - too far away).

Anyway, the sun was getting lower and lower and I was getting pretty anxious that the light wouldn't last. Finally, with about 6 minutes before sunset and the sun already behind a treeline, I got a decent shot off.

Hope to have a few more encounters to add soon.

This is really nice, Loupey Great DOF and bokeh! And such a nice perspective, allowing us to see both sides of the wings And for a first capture...wauw....Apart from the squirrel with the two walnuts, I think all my firsts have been pretty lousy...

    Good catch, Loupey!

Not sure if it's the same in your area, here, most of the owls don't show up until after 4:00pm. Where I shot, it could have seven of them flying around in the same area...large area though.

    Thanks for looking and commenting.

Knight, sorry the exif apparently gets stripped when I do a "Save for Web" which I do to resize and keep the colors from shifting.

Here is the exif. The time is incorrect as I forgot to change to daylight savings time on the camera.

MF...I don't know how you do it

Why don't you use "save as" instead - then you keep the exif data?

I've had a few bad experiences here when I did a "save as" to find that the colors had shifted significantly. I always change the color space from adobeRGB to sRGB before posting to the web, I find that the "save as" is not very reliable in terms of preserving the color balance.

Even with a "save for web", there is still a very slight color shift, but at least you can see this shift before you actually save it.
