    Pacific Coast, Or.

    Hey all,
What does this picture need? Should I have cropped to get closer to the tree?
    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Pacific Coast, Or.

I'd do some crop left and top.
Hopefully you shot in raw format and can add some fill light since fill flash wasn't used.
    Just an opinion.

    Re: Pacific Coast, Or.

It is a worthy subject (that might also look good in B&W).

I'm thinking that your composition divides the image in half both horizontically and vertically. I suspect it would be a lot stronger if you had managed to compose along the lines of the rule of thirds.
    No, I DON'T need that.

Thanks MB1 and Frog. I was going to change it to B & W as I thought it might look cool too. I think the rule of thirds would work really well if I took the picture at an angle and had more of shore drifing off to the right.

This forum is very helpful and mostly looking at other photogs pictures gives one infinite ideas. Glad to be here!

Also, a nit I have is with the smooth sawed-off end of the stump. I would do some PP to make it look weathered and less smooth - like it's been drifting around for a while. - TF

I like the concept you have here. I would definitely do a B&W conversion. It will bring out a lot more contrast and tonal range. Also I would have composed this image at a angle shot and lower to the ground mostly likely on my knees. I cut off end smoothness of the tree doesn't bother me in the least.

When I saw this title I knew it would be good.

Sort of eerie but interesting too. The shape of the tree is incredible. It definitely makes an impact.

I do think that the horizon splits the image too much in half. And should the tree be perfectly centered? My guess is yes, given the lack of other stuff around it to balance the composition.. But it would be good to see other compositions too.

    Hey DLB1973,

I really love this photograph. Very well taken. Centering subjects doesn't usually make the best of photos, but this one just works. Lovely subject, you should explore it more if it's around or close to you. Very nice !

edit: btw, I like it as is! was just thinking of ways to improve an already awesome image. not easy. lol

    Re: Pacific Coast, Or.

DLB1973, I think you have a fine photograph here. The subject is centered and the horizon is very close to center as well, but I look at this as it is and it feels right. Sometimes a photograph can go against the general rules of thumb and come out strong and i feel this is one of those.
I agree this subject has a ton of potential and I'm certain there could have been alot of other ways to approach this, but what you have here is fine with me.
Converting to b&w will work here, but I appreciate the subtle earthy tones against the light pearly blue/gray sky.
I really like the stark appearance of the twisted branches as if they are reaching up to the sky in it's final struggle before death. . .
    Nice find and capture.

I love the fact I have learned the rule of thirds -- and that you broke all the rules -- and that it works!

I like it as is. The comp, the chosen focal length, the dof - everything.

    Congrats on the Sticky.

Thanks Jetrim. The more I see the shot, the more I like it! Is it a sticky cause it's a featured photo?

Sticky is when a thread is held in place at the top and does not fall away as new threads are posted. A featured photo will get "Stuck" and become a sticky.

shebang, I like your comment , you brought a laugh for me today which is always welcome
