Great Cormorant with 500mm mirror reflex lens

Another one from my day out with the Minolta 500mm reflex lens. Great cormorant - has that one made it across to you guys? The background is water with colourful autumn leaf reflections! I'm sure I could crop it better but as usual I can't make up my mind!

Even with a 500mm, you must have been pretty close, and if cormorants there are anything like here, they are hard to get close to. In fact, I have an easier time sneaking up on balk eagles. I did, however, get within a few yards of one with my Poke Boat one time and was able to almost fill frame with my 200mm, but nothing this tight.
I don't think it can be improved with cropping. Good shot.

Re: Great Cormorant with 500mm mirror reflex lens

I was, but with a whole bunch of reeds between us - that's why I couldn't get a full body shot (besides I do like bird portraits ), and I was nearly in the lake as it was. I'd spotted it from the other side but that was too far away. It's the only time I've seen one at this particular lake (Botanical Gardens) and also the only time I've been this close. Usually they hang out in a huge flock at "Bird Island" in the middle of one of the lakes that's part of the old fortification of Copenhagen. It's quite an impressive sight, I'll have to post a shot some time.

    Thanks, Ron

The cormorants may not have a lot to look at, but their eyes have good color IMO.

An interesting background you have there, but it also seems to have some noise showing up.

Is that a new mirror lens? If I remember right, the "bokeh" from a mirror lens in the old day looked different.

Thanks for sharing a mirror shot with us! Neat to see the results provided by different equipment.
