Do you have a local pond or similar with lots of ducks and gulls to practice on? That's what I've found to be very useful. Also the open space adds a little more light this time of year than what you find in the woods. I'm happy to hear that I have a comrade in arms Maybe I should start a thread with my feeble attempts...

    Keep it up

The focus, background, and composition are just fine with me.
It looks "natural" and not like a bird being paid to pose.
    I like it a lot.
I had to look at your post to find out what BIF meant and glad I did.
    Keep Shooting!

I think it is a pretty cool shot, too. If you've got some megapixels behind it, you could crop around the cardinal for great comp.

There's a reason that it's only 600x400 with the wider crop. Any closer and it's really OOF. - TF

Re: Closer to my first BIF...

Thanks all for the comments and encouragement.

This was shot out my kitchen window with the tripod sitting in the sink. I just have to bundle up and get outside.

Also, while I was watching one of the feeders, everything scrambled and a big (buteo, species???) hawk missed one of the squirrels that was hanging around the squirrel feeder. The poor little guy was sitting on a branch tight to the tree mumbling squirrel prayers for quite some time after. Shot of the hawk? Of course not.

Ducks and gulls fly slower than smaller birds though. Still, they're more easily available and so good targets to practise with. Shooting small birds in flight is difficult if not very difficult. More difficult than shooting hummingbird hovering, believe it or not

Thats a neat shot, I like the colours and background. Very tough catching small birds in flight, I'd be thrilled to have done this well.

He just looked like a squirrel trying to hide. I would need audio to capture the clucking-like sounds he was making. Similar to the throaty noise an exited cat makes. - TF

Perhaps you had a hungry and excited cat nearby

I think that's a great image! The blurring give it character and the subject seems sharp enough to me!
