    At the limit

Mine that is, panning with the 300mm f/2.8 at 1/160s
Less than 50-50 odds of me getting it right

    Re: At the limit

Shot here, on the exit from Bridge heading towards Priory.
Not enough length to catch them on the approach, and just the wrong sun angle for the side on shot because the wheels are in shadow.
So just move on to somewhere else ...

    Re: At the limit

Thanks John, but you can see on the last photo I've just missed - the leading edge of the splitter is out of the photo. So it's a reject.

I want to get to the point where I can pick up the camera, shoot, and get it right.
I'm aiming for the moon I know, but I've got good equipment, unlike NASA who got there with rockets built by the lowest bidder
Nothing wrong with setting myself high standards though, and if I never show you my limitations you might think I don't have any !

Hey, great shots, but I was just wondering, what focus mode do you use? Do you use continuous AF, or are you far enough away that it's pretty much set near infinity and doesn't matter?

Real nice work Paul. 1/160 at 300mm... wow! Excellent clarity and color. Are these hand held?

I don't think I have ever taken a clear photo at f/2.8 with my 300 (at least now I know it can be done).

    Re: At the limit

Not hand held, shot with a monopod to aid the smooth panning.
I'm having shoulder problems and can't handle the weight of a 1D and 300mm prime.

    Re: At the limit

have you ever thought to try using a video tripod, a nice fluid head really helps with panning. Personally I prefer to release the shot, that is point my toes to where the car is going to and turn my body back around to where it is coming from and gently allow my body to relax as it comes past. my results are pretty hit and miss (and i haven't done it for ages) but i seem to get more keepers this way. Hopefully my next trip will be to the Bathurst 12 hour in February! I wish is was still the 24 hour format, but 12 will be a lot of fun anyway.

    Re: At the limit

Nice job, it does take a lot of practice. I usually start at 1/160, get some good ones, then start going slower and slower.
I wish the LMS guys would come over to the states more and race in the ALMS races.
