Very cool, I like the angle, dof, and the soft light and color. My one minor gripe is that the fence seems to be surrounded by a fringing cloud, and that makes the sky look somewhat shopped.

Nice composition. It draws the eyes in to the shot really well. Glad that the fence is broken at the right place. Just very nice lines over all. And also liking the dreamy feel.

A very classic shot with your signature all over it. I like the broken board and leaning post. The slight hint of fall and the small plant at the second broken borad is perfectly placed. This looks very much like it could be here in Rome. Nice work Gary.

    Gary,

this is a stunning shot. I agree with Anbesol about the halo around the first post. It might be artefacts' from the compression but check it out.

    Beautifully composed.

    Re: A Broken Fence

As others have already said, great shot, but I'm noticing the "halo" all along the top of the fence line and around the tree to the right. If you used unsharp mask, try toning the intensity down and bringing the clipping up a touch and it should reduce the effect substantially.

    Re: A Broken Fence

I must agree with what's already been said about this being a beauty. Curious about whether you shot this in a portait format or if you cropped it from a landscape? Seems like it might have made the image even stronger if it was in a landscape format and the fence continued on into the scene. Anyway, very nice shot. Its one of those "wish I'd have done that" images.

    Re: A Broken Fence

I think I would prefer to see it without the post processing.
Was it Orton effect, or HDR or a mix of both?
It's got the haloing around the first post that made me think HDR, but the rest looks subtly soft, as if something else was applied.
    I agree it's a nice image, but I don't like the PP

    Re: A Broken Fence

I'm seeing artefacts on the post but all along the top rail as well. The fact that it is broken lifts this away from other similar type shots but it is also your great viewing point and colour treatments that make this a grand shot.

    Re: A Broken Fence

Thanks all for the great comments.

This was not an HDR, but rather an Orton effect applied. The halo around the fence seems to had come from a combination of selectively adjusting the sky exposure and the dreamy Orton effect.

Here replacing the original is a re edit to rid most of the Halo effect around the fence edges.

I'm glad you find the composition to work. This is the crop out of the camera. I rarely crop much later on as I always try to get it as I want in the camera.

    Thanks much for your time.

Nice overall composition and exposure. I would reduce the soften effect by 50%.

    Nice.

This is nice. great find, great capture. I never find these kind of shots because I am always looking for the grand lanscape.

    Great Shot!

Beautiful eye for the shot and the perspective. Colors are just right and inviting. Too many positives things on this one to pick at it! Fence has seen a lot of changes here and can tell a great story.

    Re: A Broken Fence

Thanks to everyone for getting back to me on the edit here. Thing about the Orton effect is that if you do it too lightly then the image just looks soft without looking dreamy, which defeats the purpose. It does print alot sharper than appears here and so maybe that helps in that regard.
Thanks all for the good feedback.
