Does half of a face work in this picture? I know the sharpening is probably alittle too much, but what about the idea of leaving his natural eye color and taking the rest of the color away?

Yes I think it works, because it's subtle. Partial desaturation, in my experience, tends to be too "in your face" - this is nice (apart from the oversharpening you mention). I wonder though if you need QUITE so much black on the left?

The half face composition works, but I also think some of the black can be gone. An 8x10 format should look very good and reduce the black area.
The color in the eye is ok, but does not do anything for me. I have seen that so often now, but at least this is very subtle and is ok.

I too think you have far too much black space on the left of the frame. The problem is that the image is almost split exactly in half by the black and the face. Likely this would work much better with a 1/3 to 2/3 split.

Thanks for the input. I agree the black area is a bit much. I'll try a different crop and see how she fares.
