The infamous abandoned motel at the north end of the Salton Sea.

I think the dark lower portion adds to the gloomy/abandoned look and the sky is perfect for the atmosphere.

I think if I had to change anything, it might be to crop just a little off the left side, but I can live with it the way it looks now. Nice capture, G.

GB what's the history behind the Motel? It looks so much like the Bates Motel from that Hitchcock movie..LOL I keep coming back to this one. I really like it.

    Re: The Motel

Great one, GB. I would crop off the left to eliminate the clear sky area and from the top to bring the sign up closer and there will still be alot of that stromy gloom sky in the bg.
    Great subject and comp

    Re: The Motel

Frog - Funny cause this place is so gloomy and run down, but then the overall area can have some pretty magnificent sunsets. This is the second time I've been out there when the sky just kicked butt I guess that's what the developers saw when they took the chance with the Salton Sea.. Too bad it didn't work out.

Chaman - GOOD GOD YOU'RE RIGHT !! That does look a vampire! I don't think it likes me photographing it's skid row crib either.. guess I was lucky to escape with my life.

Danic - Thanks, maybe I'll print it.

John, Gary - Here is your crop idea. I think it's better overall for the reasons you mentioned Gary. One thing that disappoints me a tad is that I had to crop off the little bit of the bottom because it seemed out of place, and as a result it seems to be missing a base (is it floating? You don't know).

Greg - I'm not sure on the Motel.. I have to ask a local next time I'm there. You can read a little at these links though: http://photos.signonsandiego.com/gal...lbum155/salton and http://www.legendsofamerica.com/ca-saltonsea.html (multiple pages).

Basically, they thought this place would be another Palm Springs. But the agricultural runoff raised the salinity of the water so high that the fish all started dieing. Only Tilapia survive, but with massive dies every year and this stinks the place up so bad you wouldn't believe. Several areas flooded and were wiped out. People split, tourists quit coming and most everything shut down. It's one of the poorest spots in California now.. the only people that really like it are the Photographers ! (and there are a lot of them I hear, including some big name productions that do photo shoots of models).

So if anyone here makes it to southern Cali, put this place on your list - tt's a lot of fun to shoot!
