More Macros ... am I getting better?

These were shot with the Sigma 50 - 500 and the Olympus 25MM macro tube. I can't for the life of me figure out how your guys get such tight closeups. Do I need to add another tube to get closer?

How much closer would you want to be? I think these are awesome as is. I prefer some environment included in the shot.

I've seen some where you can count the cells in the eyes of the insect. I'd love to get that close. I think I may need to buy another tube and extend to 50 mm.

I see that this lens, by itself, can focus down to 39" and 118" at 50mm and 500mm, respectively. That's not very close, so adding tubes (even 50mm worth) isn't get to get you as close (i.e. as high of a magnification) as you want.

If you put the same tube on a lens that focuses closer (say a 50mm prime, a 70-200mm zoom, etc.), you will approach what you are looking for.

Also, watch your backgrounds. In your last two shots, I would have jostled around until I found a cleaner background against which to place the bugger.

Re: More Macros ... am I getting better?

Ahhh I see. So if I were to switch to my 45 - 150 say.... which has a much closer focusing distance, with my current tube (25mm) then I should actually get closer. Such an interesting science this macro photography stuff. I figured the higher the lens power the closer I would get (like the telephoto shooting when not shooting macros).

Thanks for the advice Loupey. I was so concentrating on the subject that I neglected the BG. Besides that they more so damn fast I think I need to pre plan the location and wait for something to land.

Holy cow! These were taken with the sigma 50-500? Very impressive indeed. I'd never have thought of trying for a macro with mine.
