Barry, just a few things. I think the composition is ok, perhaps a bit too tight and maybe a vertical frame would work better here. Thats not the real issue here though for me. I think the lighting is too harsh and direct creating those hard shadows underneath the petals. A soft duffused lighting will make the subject here more pleasing.
Another thing is the editing work you semed to have done to this. It looks as though you have either removed the background or tried burning it in to have the flower in a stark black bg. The editing workis obvious and would need to be cleaned up especially around the top edges of the flower and some remaining blemishes here and there in the blank black areas.
If you set the flower up in a vase and secure a piece of black fabric (T shirt would do) behind it (at least a few feet away) and spill some soft light on the flower from different angles you would achieve the black bg effect without having to do the editing. If this is what you already did and came out with a gray bg it may be that your subject is still too close to the bg and light spill on the black will make it washed and appear gray.
