I sort of lean towards the top one - the geometry is better and the composition though unconventional seems very interesting with the large middle sky. The bottom one's colors are good, but the sun's shape isn't as appealing. IMO.

I think you need more foreground in these shots.. What your showing is like a tease.. I know the color and sky is the Star of this Show, but you included a co star ( Trees) so its important to give Fair Billing..
Another Quick Comment... When you shoot at the Big Ball you loose.. I don't care how beautiful a sunrise/ sunset is, when a Blown area around the sun appears highlighted , it distracts... These type shots are all about Mood, you want No Distractions.. You do Not have to include the Ball in a Successful Sunrise/ sunset shot... you want rich color, all the ball gives , 9 out od 10 times is Blown areas, which equal = Distraction..
I always relate to the Old western Gunfighters when think
a great tip indeed ,my plan was to head out to the same area for a sunrise shot, you want to see more landscape with just enought of the glow from the either rising or setting sun, but in this case,it was just field before the trees ,but i'll add more composition in the next shot, any tips for creating the early morning mood,i'm thinking a fresh start, beginning of a new day,if it were more mid summer a shot of early morning dew drops,i suppose it really comes down to having a good eye for surrounding composition,? i'll try to keep to the right and produce rich colors, and perhaps for the first time shoot in raw, never have before.
I will say this, Manitoba sunsets are the same as any other unless you have a very wide perspective. In Manitoba you can see the whole sky. Manitoba sunsets are much better with a wide angle lens.
your probally right Don, that was shot with my 200mm lens with the polarizer filter on,but from wher i was standing a wider shot, in my view would have entered too much distraction.i had only enough time to get set up and start shooting,it was a more of a spur of the moment to drive out there.left my smaller camera in the car, that would of given me a really wide angle shot.live and learn right.
