    600mm Macro lens?

    OK all,

I finally started playing with extension tubes! I thought it might be handy to try the 600 out as a butterfly lens this macro season. Figured I'd start messing with it in that capacity, and this Burrowing Owl was cooperative enough to let me practice on him. Here I'm using a 25mm Extension tube on the 600L, with the 1DsMII body. I was able to creep to about 12 feet with this setup, and the results are kinda cool. The normal minimum focusing distance of the 600 is 18 feet. The downside, of course, is the aperture that you MUST shoot at to get any DOF. These were at f/16. Speeds at 1/125....which is pushing the envelope of usability on the 600. Still, if you have a cooperative subject, it's a cool concept.

    A very cooperative owl indeed!

Did you ask it to turn and pose for you or you creep around it?

LOL - Thanks for the FP! You need to get down here on a photo excursion next season! It's too late now for this year. Just a bit of shorebird mating season left, and then it's into the summer macro season.

The invitation stands for anyone from this forum. If you want to shoot SW Florida, it would be my pleasure to take you out to the spots. Just be sure I get plenty of notice you're coming, and understand that I am strictly a weekend warrior photographer. I actually have a regular job during the week! c'mon down!

Bob, these are beautiful images, extremely sharp. A good combination lens setup. Congratulations!
