Re: Wind Aided

I am shocked and saddened to think about how much better this image would have been if you had only shot with a D3!

O.K., how about a critique?

#1 I'm thinking a very small crop from the bottom. There is something dark (likely just a wave) on the bottom edge/left center that doesn't quite match everything else.

#2 The overall color seems just a tad yellow/green. Were the clouds on the horizon really that color?

#3 Sweet composition, do you have any similar images in portrait format?

#4 Normally I would say the horizon and the sails are too centered but I think it works really well here.

Really good Len (too bad about the camera thing......).

Do you find that wave distracting?...is that what is driving your comment?

That is actual colors....it was a strange sunset we were sailing into.

No, dammit....that was the first thing I thought of when I was reviewing after I got home. I learn this stuff when I screw it up.

Thanks...that's what I thought too.......glad for the reinforcement.

Thanks for the kind words and the comments.

I'm still trying to catch up to the capabilities of the D200........while still learning photo skills......A new camera makes that worse I think.

D300 is still in the back of my mind for other reasons, but I don't want to take a step back.

D3......is way above my skill level.

Re: Wind Aided

I like the 3 dimensional effect of the sail and beam coming towards you ..and out of the picture. A smaller aperture might have brought it more into focus.

I know you won't pay attention to me but this is a good shot by my standards. I only wish you'd not cropped so much.

Why won't I pay attention to you? Did I miss something.

Thanks for the kind words.

I didn't crop it at all.........I wished I'd had my 12-24 with me to get more width (it was shot at 22mm f/10 1/250's).

I also wished I'd done it in portrait.

Hindsight is 20-20 always.

Re: Wind Aided

Beautiful shot, really well composed. I love the back lighting in the sails. The colors look right to me, on my screen.
simple, effective.
Well done

Re: Wind Aided

As a sailor I think you caught the essence of sailing very well.

I have seen many sights like these but never got round to capturing them.

I think it s composition and exposure are very good.

What type of boat is it?

Re: Wind Aided

I want to point out to everyone that Len won his local camera club competition this weekend with this one-and sold a print for what I guess was a pretty penny.

A few more and he will have to start calling himself a pro!

I LOVE THE SHOT!!! i grew up sailing on a C&C 34 with my dad this just took me back. I love the colors i love the position , the overall effect is superb. I love the colors on the sails, thats not easy to caputure. I agree with readingr this shot captures what sailing is all about. Congrats on winning the contest. Great Job all around.

Re: Wind Aided

Len - Congrats on your sticky. The composition, color and lighting are really unusual here. It's like I see it and don't know what to do with it, there being so many different things, angles, and elements in the shot. But it all seems to work.

I'm originally from PG county btw. I used to like cruising through the eastern shore and looking at the architecture and wetlands. A lot of photographic opportunities..

Congrats on the competition win.

It was justly deserved.
