I really like the energy in this photo. There are so many shades of blue in the water and sky. Great shot.

Reminds me of some of the shots of Hawaii I took earlier this year. I love the combination of dark blue water and white spray.

    Re: Turbulence

    Now this is nice but......

I think you need to pay more attention to the rule of thirds. For me the image is too evenly split right down the middle by where the land ends. I would probably like it more with more water on the right without taking any of the land that you captured on the left. That means stepping back a bit or shooting with a wider lens and either way croping the resulting image into a panoramic format. Then you would have about 1/3 of the image with shore and 2/3 with that wild water.

BTW I do very much like where you placed the horizon.

BTW2 I tried to see what it would look like with 2/3 of the image shorline and only 1/3 water but didn't like it. The water really is an important part of this image.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Re: Turbulence

Very exciting and powerful scene. I agree to an extent with what MB1 is saying about the rock ending in the middle. The balance of the overall image with the rocks and water crashing is very heavy on the left side, but still and yet it works for me. Not a perfectly balanced comp, but still very acceptable, I think. I also would have liked to have seen the water crashing a bit higher over the horizon. Perhaps getting down lower or waiting for that perfect crash. . .Would have given it a bit more 3 dimensional quality to it.
these are nit piks for the most part.
You have a great looking image and well done.

beautifully done, nice color and sharp too. I wonder what camera and lens was used for this shots.

    You thinking something like this?

I think it minimizes the effect of the waves further up the shore........and minimizes the scale of the waves.

Raw converted with Capture NX.........Only PP is minor High Pass sharpening and a slight adjusment to contrast & then a crop.

Thanks all for the nice commenbts. I'd appreciate any comparison between the original and the recrop per MB1's comments. Here are the 2 again.

    Thanks in advance.

#1 You ain't going to get any pix like this in Indianapolis (of course you didn't take this one from the Eastern Shore but still....).

#2 Yes, this is more like what I had in mind but perhaps just a bit too much sea added. I see a vertical wave line running through the image at about 15% from the right edge. To the far right there is a patch of fairly smooth blue ocean so crop from the right about 10-15% of your second image and that might do it. Then you would have the rough looking seas while still getting the shore and water into better proportions
    No, I DON'T need that.

Yes, very energenic. Nicely composed. However, there seems to be something unusual about the shot too .. perhaps it was oversharpened.. ? I ask because whenever I see little shiny spots on areas like rock edges, etc, sharpening is usually the reason. The sky looks a little funny too. My discriminating eye is often wrong though -- you tell me.

Would have been interesting if a surfer was standing on that rock with their surfboard btw!

Actually..........the shiny spots are sunlight reflecting of the running water from the previous wave.

The surfer would have been great.....just to give you a perspective of how big these waves were, here is a picture a friend took of me while I was shooting the picture I presented. Unfortunatly, these waves were dangerous enough that you couldn't get anyone close.

I like the full version. the colors and expanse of that power coming in is intriguing. It looks more dangerous and more beautiful at the same time.
