I think your vertical crop was much better. In this image there is nothing interesting going on in the foreground although your skyline is good.

In your vertical crop you had the road pulling the viewer in and something interesting in all parts of the image. Give that one another try and if you want a horizontal image try to get something interesting in the foreground too.
