First shot with my 30D and 100-400 lens.

After playing with the camera and experimenting with some of the settings, I decided I had better take a shot. We were in the midst of a mild snow storm, so I didn't want to take my new equipment outside. Instead, I opened my door and took a quick shot of this hungry squirrel. I just wanted to experience the feel of pressing the shutter and also see how well the photo turned out handheld at the extreme focal length. I'm very pleased with the clarity of this lens and the smoothness of the camera. This was shot handheld at 400mm.

    EXIF - ISO 640 F7.1 1/320 sec.

Mike that is some shot, it's so sharp on my screen. What a great lens and camera, I can't see any noise in your image and you used ISO 640, fantastic. I can't wait to see you post some bird images.

    Cool!

The 30D has a nice sound and feel doesn't it? I played around with the 40D and 1DmkIII this weekend and they don't sound quite as good. Although the 10D sounds the best - as if sound counts for something

Just for kicks, try some test shots with the IS turned off. Best way to appreciate that feature

Congrats on the new aquisition! That 100-400 has been my staple lens for 2 years! You seem to have a good grasp of it already! Nice work!

    Thanks, all.

Cassie, I'm anxious to find some birds to try it out on too. Next time I'll try it at ISO 800.

Knight, I think I will enjoy it.

Loupey, I think you are a little biased. I looked at your amazing gallery and see you shoot the same camera. I will try with IS turned off, just for the heck of it.
