Thanksgiving - My 1st shoot with the 40D

My Canon 40D came yesterday. I barely had enough time with all the family stuff to even open the manual and charge the battery before I went to one of the two Thanksgiving Day games left in our area.

They ended up being very dark.

Here are the pictures from the 1st and 3rd Quarters.

Re: Thanksgiving - My 1st shoot with the 40D

You did very good for your first time out.

Some very simple fixes right off that bat. Open up your aperture. You shot at f4.0 and should be at f2.8. The iso was a little low on a few and the shutter was really fast on one.

What I do is set at f2.8 and it stays. From there I adjust my shutter speed accordingly and when it starts getting too slow I start bumping up my iso.
    It's not blurry. It's bokeh.

    VinnyC,
Instead of thumbnails resize to 640 on the longest side and make sure file size is 244KB or less and they will be easier to view here. If you have PhotoShop Elements you can do it all in the Save for Web. Make sure you set the pixel size first or it will take longer to do the resizing and so on.

Re: Thanksgiving - My 1st shoot with the 40D

I agree with Jeta, open up the aperture and don't be afraid to increase ISO to 800 or more if needed. These were in daylight which is the easiest HS football you'll be likely to shoot. I see a lot of folks get hung up on blowing out the whites with football, but the reality is that with the combination of white and dark jerseys etc you will end up underexposed in most cases. I shoot fully manual as well since the camera is not reliable to judge exposure consistently in this environment. Good captures though and with a little levels adjustment and maybe some contrast these should look pretty decent.
