Puffin with sand eels

I was going through my photos from summer 2006 and found this image of a puffin with sand eels in it's beak.
It was taken on the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland.

Cassie.

Sweeeet shot. When I was in Alaska, I really wanted a picture of one. Problem was, every puffin I saw was buzzing by 90 mph. I really like this photo.

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Thank you Knight and Mike. It was amazing how close we could get to them, you could go out to the Farne Islands on a boat trip which ran during the breeding season.
The Farne Islands have about 22 species of breeding seabirds including Guillemots, Razor Bills, Eider Ducks, 4 species of Terns and a staggering 70,000 Puffins.

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Cassie,

Lovely shot. I tried to take one of these down in Torquay and failed miserably last year. Part of the reason why I now have a full blown DSLR.

Farne island is a must visit, on my to do list.

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Love those guys and love your image!

I must add that island to my to-go list. I've always wondered how they can keep adding to their stash without losing fish already in their beak.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Thank you Roger and Loupey. You will love the Farne Islands, there are so many seabirds sometimes you don't know which to shoot first.

Great shot. What gear did you use? Camera? Lens?

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Thank you Scott. They are really comical little birds.

Speed. At the time I was using a Canon 20D, 70-200mm F2.8 IS USM and a Manfrotto 055 tripod. You can get so close to the puffins it's amazing, so that lens was perfect for me.

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Most puffin images are shot with that very setup due to them having very little fear so I hear.

This image is amazing because that is one of the hardest birds to get proper exposure on. Sweet image, great exposure!

Thank you Paulnj and Tonny for your comments. I had to take quite a few before I was happy with the exposure.

Cassie, nice shot. I like the added feature of the eels and your background includes similar birds. Must have been a wonderful trip.

Re: Puffin with sand eels

Cassie - your shot deserved more time than it received last week due to technical difficulties. So PaulNJ and I agree that it would remain up for this week
