Root and Stream

I rained all day yesterday but I managed to get to one spot and shoot one series.

It was getting late and very dark. I can't make this look any less mucky.

Shot with 28mm f/1.8 at f/22, ISO 100, 6 seconds.


I don't always think water should look so milky. But the jaggedness of the roots seemed to contrast the smoothness of the water. What do you think?

I'll second that. I have a pair on now, and will buy another pair soon.

I'm not sure how I feel about this image. I really like the texture in the roots, but I don't know if the stream helps or hurts the image. The first thing that came to mind as I was looking at this image was that the top of the photo reminded me of a flooded parking lot. I have tried cropping out that top part, and I kind of like that a little better, but I'm still not sure there is enuf here for me.

I may have to come back to this image later.

Believe me, I completely understand This scene stopped me in my tracks. I shot a LOT and from all around (well at least about 150-degrees around), high, low, close, far. I just couldn't seem to make the shooting angles work with my 28mm and 50mm lenses. I kept wanting to get closer but wider - the 17-40mm might have been the ticket here.

There was a shot in there. I feel I just couldn't find IT. Might be better with the stream half-frozen later.


Two more. The first one is from closer and higher than the original post.

I think you're right, there is a shot in there somewhere. I think both of these two photos work better than the first one.

I like the third shot, it reminds me of a creatures long thin bony hand dipping into the water. Sorry Loupey I've got a good imagination.

With my landscape eye, your too close to the tree. You need to pull back and give more context to the tree, stream and the roots and give more of an indication of the surrounding area.

I do like the real close up of the roots and the water but the other too need more room around them.

I agree with Mike. The crop of the first one looks funny. I think it's the smooth water at the top of the frame. The second one works for me! The third one is good, but the second makes a statement.

Roger, I think you're right. Having the tree be more "lonely" in a wider shot would be nice. Unfortunately, not feasible at this location though. The first shot is with me with my back nearly up against a sheer bank. But what makes it especially tough to frame is that there is busy road just 15' up on the far side of the bank (just beyond the smooth water part). And at this time of the evening, the headlights were reflecting off the water. Had to time my 6 second exposures at just the right gaps in traffic

I'll keep coming by this spot and see how it develops.

I didn't respond to this at once because I wasn't sure about it. I've had to come back and look a few times, but that first one just wasn't working for me either. Plus I'm really bad at critiquing lol. I agree with what Roger said though.

Isn't life tough - could have been nice too. The number of places I've been thinking if there was just a bit more space it would have worked brilliantly.

Oh well.
