C&O Canal in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

I made this a couple of months ago but have but have been too busy to get anything done with it. Comments and critiques welcome. Suggestions cheerfully explored but leave the editing to me.

I'm thinking that is a morning image and you were shooting into the light. The reason I am thinking that is the lack of detail on the far bank of the canal-I can just barely make out the person under the tree (is that me?) and there is very little detail in the trees and the water.

Do you shoot with a split ND filter?

I know you needed to do it to get the entire smokestack in but the image is almost split in half by the skyline. I'm thinking that cropping some of the canal at the bottom wouldn't hurt.
    No, I DON'T need that.

Actually it's cropped, I didn't like the way the smokestack was hovering in the near center of the frame. Here it is for comparisons sake.

This was shot in the evening just before sunset, last July. The bright cloud you see in the distance is the backside of a rain cloud that is being lit up by the setting sun. In fact, it's still raining, you can see the droplets on the surface of the water. I don't have an ND filter for my fish eye lens, probably should invest in it but, it's not really a primary lens for me. This was a quick test shot before a band promo that I was doing that afternoon. Here's a look at the band too. Taken a few minutes later.

I think the lean in the first one needs corrected and the second one is good but needs leveling On the last one I think you should clone the stack out it's just to close to the first band members head.

    CL,

I have been back to this many times and now know why I have problems with it.

Its the trees, their to dark, and it keeps pulling my eyes there and won't let them roam.

The tower needs a bit of correction as well as someone already commented.

It looks an interesting area and would suggest coming back to it earlier in the day or use a long exposure to get more light into the picture.

I do like the image with the people a lot better than the original, but that smokestack is so close to that one fellow's head.. looks like a Halloween costume It may also be slightly cramped.

One thing I really hate about digital is the way it steals your wide angles away from you -- my 24-135mm Tamron zoom is now closer to 38-210mm. I guess wildlife photogs like that, but not me. Seems like this particular shot could have used a little wider view on the sides.

Overall - probably a very usable shot for them if they're planning on using it for publicity, but also somewhat busy. I do like how they're illuminated.

Thanks for the responses guys. I appreciate your taking the time and thought. I can see your point about the trees Roger. I had the ISO punched up to 1600 but it was just a murky rainy afternoon with brilliant light just beyond me. I spent my whole afternoon chasing the sun and never quite catching it.
GB & Greg - I know the smoke stack is too close to his head but I hate the thought of cloning it out. It was an out take anyway and wasn't the picture their manager/designer picked. I just liked it in spite of it's faults. You are so right about the loss on my fish eye GB! I should have brought my old K1000 along to max out the effect for at least a few shots. Note to self for next time.
