    A Mammoth Lake

Just found and scanned this slide, left over from last year's trip to Mammoth Lakes, CA.

    Too contrasty? I'm not sure.

i like it, except the white stone in the foreground, it attracts too much of my attention.
    is the whole photo tilted?

    Re: A Mammoth Lake

Personally I do not find the contrast as annoying. Actually I like it!

I like the colors too.... but i also agree with engineer, the rock in front is a bit distracting, and the there seems to be a tilt in the photo.

All in all though, this is a very nice capture!

Always a pleasure seeing your work!

    Cheers

Yes, it is too contrasty and seems tilted too.
    No, I DON'T need that.

I like the composition/framing of the scene, but also feel it is too contrasty. The light was too strong and direct especially for using Velvia.
The water reflecting the blue sky is amazing.

    Re: A Mammoth Lake

Thks for the comments and critiques. Dang, you are right! It is tilted! I didn't even notice it. The rock is distracting? Yes, suppose it is, and that it sort of 'blocks' ones approach into the scene, but I also wonder if it were not there would there seem to be a missing foreground subject?

Engineer, Marc - haven't heard from you fellows in awhile. Welcome back. You like the contrast, huh?

MB, Gary - I've wondered, seems strong contrast can ruin a shot, but lack of contrast in lenses, films, and photographs is considered a negative too, as people comment that the pix are too 'blah', etc. I guess there's an ideal middle ground. Gary, you're right, Velvia is such a contrasty film by formula, I guess it's dangerous to shot in mid day like this.

The biggest issue I see with the contrast seems to be lack of detail in certain areas, like the shadows under the rocks. It also has a floodlight look to the foreground. But personally I like the contrast in the background. Maybe I can do a little masking to make everything nice.....

The only problems here I feel are caused by the harsh light. It is a very pleasing composition. Oh and a bit tilted.

Yes I like the contrast.... but of course that is a very subjective opinion!
