Roadside Attraction: Howdy from Wisconsin Dells, WI!

I've returned from a wander and am just beginning to review what I caught along the way.
Comments and critiques welcomed. Suggestions cheerfully explored.

Cindy, this is really good. Love the lighting and the proportions. This looks like they are on a stage or theatre set. Very cool . . .

Re: Roadside Attraction: Howdy from Wisconsin Dells, WI!

I like the reflections and would like to see more water and less cliff (or the other way around). For me the kids sitting highest from the water are in the exact horizontal center of the image and I think it would look better if they were lower or higher.

Nothing you can or could do about it but I bet if the kids were wearing more colorful suits that would add just the splash of color the image could use.

None the less, this is a great capture. Get back there quick and take more ;-).

Very nice CL. Did you ride the Ducks when you were in the Dells?

Re: Roadside Attraction: Howdy from Wisconsin Dells, WI!

Thanks for the responses everyone!

Michael - Yes we did ride the Duck! This image was taken from the Duck just as it entered the river at Echo Rock. We had such a great time and it is so beautiful there! We did our camping a few miles away at Holiday Shores which is just a super campground if you're out that way.

MB- I'm posting a second larger version for better detail and with a slightly different composition, more cliffs less water. The kids do have some good color on them but it didn't really survive the translation to the smaller image. Hopefully this will give you a better view.

Dells Shot #2

GB, Gary, Greg and J ~ Thanks for the positive reactions. I knew this set was going to be great before I even picked up the camera. I'm very excited to have some prints done up and hang one on the wall.

Re: Roadside Attraction: Howdy from Wisconsin Dells, WI!

Looks nice and sounds like you had a great time. The ducks - hehehe - I think they are a must for anyone visiting the Dells for the first time. I have stayed at holiday shores many times and it is a great campground. Well maintained and kept very clean, and with it being a bit out of the town area it seems to be a bit more on the quiet side.

I am guessing you did the Noah's Ark thing too - maybe even had a swig with nig ?

Re: Roadside Attraction: Howdy from Wisconsin Dells, WI!

Thanks for taking a second look J.

Wyatt - Yeah the ducks were a hoot! The kids screamed their heads off and laughed at all the driver's corny jokes. (Even when they didn't understand them.) We didn't get to do Noah's Ark as one of my littles is 4 (too short for most of the rides) and gets righteously mad if she gets left out of anything. Nig's looked like fun but again we had the kids with us so we opted for the Wurst Haus and Beer Garden which had something for everyone. The kids really liked the Glockenspiel there.

We were camping there two weeks ago Monday and the tent got pretty wet (2 inches of water in the bottom) in the first of the storms to roll through the area. I spent most of Tuesday drying out and getting ready for the next batch of storms but the kids had a ball!

For those of you scratching your head and thinking "You rode a duck?" See attached for visual explanation. World War II Army issue 6 Wheel Drive Amphibious Vehicles. They are the coolest!

Re: Roadside Attraction: Howdy from Wisconsin Dells, WI!

I have never camped in the Dells, but the wife and I went up there last spring just to ride the ducks. It's only about an hours drive from here. It was my first time, and it was a blast. I really wanted to canoe the upper Dells this spring, but never got around to it. Maybe this fall, after most of the tourist are gone. I don't think I want to be on the river in a canoe, with jet boats full of tourists making huge waves!

That rock face with it's fantastic colours provides a wonderful background for what is a beautiful composition. it's such an attractive image and stands up to repeated viewing.

I couldn't agree more. One thing I realy like about this image is how small the people are. There size makes it difficult to make out the details of their clothes, which in turn makes the photo almost seem timeless. This could have been shot yesterday, or 50 years ago.

Cindy,
Nothing to add, as everyone's pretty much given you whatever critiques you need. I just wanted to say I really like this one.

I'm stickied! Gosh, I honored! Thanks so much!

Thanks for the very kind words, John, Yoyo and Tom!! I'm quite pleased with the results and have only just started reviewing the rest of the pictures from this particular opportunity. I'll probably post a few more candidates here for consideration. Thanks so much for the encouragement with this series so far!!!
