4th of July: A Study In White Balance

Sea World lights up the tower with red, white, and blue lights. I took white balance samples and came up with these shots. Your thought....

Wow... 2 and 3 are my favs. Image 2 has water / reflection as I have never seen. Fantastic experimentation. CF :O)

CF - I really like the colors on # 1 and 2, though # 3 seems to have less intrusion from the wires. I've tried a few times to get shots of the seaworld tower, but haven't found the right angle yet... your use of reflection seems to work good. There's still a fair amt of negative space in the water though -- too bad there wasn't a boater or canoer out there to help out. I think you're on to something, just need to figure out that neg. space

    Rick,

Again thanks so much for the kind words. I have not been out to do night work for a while so thought I would concentrate on it a bit. I am going to Italy in October and want to be prepared. I was hoping one of the other WB series shot would make a POD but no luck. I am on a real dry streak and can't seem to break through. Competition is really terrific though; some great stuff of late.

Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

I know what you mean about the water/space. I took a couple shots with a boat in that space but then the image lost the appeal and focal point of the tower and reflection. I opted to keep the space and let the rest of the image speak for itself. Or, at least that was the attempt. I think. As for the wires, there isn't a bloody thing you can do about them unless removed in PS. I considered that but left them in as that ride is such an integral part of the Park.

This was shot from the parking lot on Mission Bay just beyond Sea World off Mission Bay Drive. Lots of parking and easily accessible.

CF---excellent series. Aside from some great shots, this works as a learning tool for me personally. I've been trying new things this summer, and your example is yet another opportunity for exploration.

I think that I like the last one the best. The reflection has a surreal look to it. It might could use sharpened some but the composition is spot on. The sky really looks good to. Nice work CF. You'll have it down before you get to Italy. Try and take a laptop so you can drop us a line.

    Greg/John:

Thanks very much. Glad I could be of some inspiration. Lord knows I have learned so much and taken the tips from others. I don't know if I will take a laptop on the trip but I understand that internet accessibility is not a problem. So, I will certainly let you know how things are going.

    Thanks again for the comments.
