    First post-waterfalls

Hey all, just got a new camera for graduation and broke my arm so I thought I would work on my photography while Im one handed. Found the site from some nice pictures photo-john posted on a mountain bike forum. I thought these turned out all right but wanted some more experienced advice.

I uploaded them to my member gallery but couldnt figure out how to actually get them in the thread so I had to resort back to imageshack.

    Re: First post-waterfalls

    Welcome to PR.

i like teh second one alot, however th log is pretty distracting ( not that you can do much about it) and the lower right hand corner is blown out.

the 4th one is a neat idea, but is competely blown out. Try metering for the brightest area you can (for a quick shutter speed) and then pop the flash if you want detail in the cave area. or if you want the same effect with the water blurred try shooting it right at dusk when its dark enough to get long shutter speeds and not blow out the water.

i'm not sure how to directly link from the gallery as i can never get my photos uploaded to it, and just use photobucket to host my images.

Thanks, I tried the upload box this time, hopefully it will work. Redid two from the first post and added some of the same waterfall shot out of the cave and one other. Its not as blown out but I couldnt decide if I liked the top of the falls in the picture.

    Re: First post-waterfalls

Much nicer - now we can see them better.

These all are overexposed. This is common in such dark scenes when there are patchy sunlit areas or white subjects (falls). So advice #1 would be to try again under heavy cloud cover or during early/late time of day. This will ensure that the exposure differences within your shot (the dynamic range) will not be so different. That way, you can expose more for the surroundings without blowing out the whites.

I like #1, #3, and #5. But they are a bit too "loose" IMO. In #1, I like how the water flow changes direction - so a tighter crop/shot to make this part more prominent would be my choice. In #3, I think there is a bit too much space on top. In #5, I really like how the 4 falls are shown and I think the story is there - thus, again, my feeling that there is too much space at the top which is not contributing to the story. Oh, and that fallen tree needs to come down too.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks, I went back and cropped some and played with the saturation and whatnot. Unfortunately I was on vacation when I took them so I cant go back when theres better light, oh well. There were logs all over the place, some looked good and some got in the way. Think these look better though.

    Re: First post-waterfalls

Hi agtaylor...this looks like such a beautiful place to visit! I think my favorites of this bunch are the ones with the layers of rock and layers of the falls (like the 2nd one down).
