    Untitled Experiment

Playing around with shadows, b&w conversions, and split toning. This was one that I liked. Any thoughts?

    Re: Untitled Experiment

Aaron - My first impression is probably a good technique, but wrong subject for that technique. I could see this working w/ a B&W shot of a model, but, it just seems to miss with me with the shades here. I feel the shades shouldn't show the grain, etc. Just my opinion.

If you have one lying around, try the same technique on a model shot n post. I'd be interested in seeing what happens.

Thanks GB Let me take a look through and see what else I have for shots I could try this on...

    Re: Untitled Experiment

Well, since I had this shot handy from playing with it the past 2 days... I used the same hues as the other shot but, took the shadow saturation down just a hair.

    Re: Untitled Experiment

Ok, but I was thinking more along the lines of on a model's face etc. Try it on this shot (desaturate it, etc..)

    Re: Untitled Experiment

Ooo, worked nice on that shot. I played with the levels just to add a bit more contrast to the image after converting to grayscale and prior to split toning. Here's shots with and without the split toning just for comparison...

Hmmm... I think the first one with the slight sepia tone looks best. Can you add more grain? -g

    Re: Untitled Experiment

I like the toned version better too. I just posted the b&w for comparison.

Is this what you had in mind?

    Re: Untitled Experiment

Pretty much! To me, the grain effect just works better with human subjects than the shades.... gb

    Re: Untitled Experiment

Thanks GB Been starting to play a lot more with this lately as I've been adding more black and white photography books to my library and getting more ideas from them. Just picked a nice book on black white toning as well. Deals more with print making but, this I guess would be the digital equivalent.

Here's another take on it GB. Been having some problems with hotlinking so if the image doesn't show, you can view it here: http://www.pbase.com/xia_ke/image/80716710
