Not a bad shot! It almost looks as if it is all setup to look this way.

    Good job.

Well composed, The scene looks very much like a movie set or zoo, Maybe even like a six flags ride or something. The "Grackle", we call them crows around here, is slightly under exposed but it gives him a scarer look to him. Well done.

I was visiting a public garden in Dallas.
They have misters installed low to the ground in this area because of all the ferns.
The mist made a nice 'foggy' background behind the bird.

Very good! Wish I had taken that one. I think I would prefer the bird to be a little more prominent, but the rest of the scene is too important to crop anything out.

This is one of the best posts I have seen in a while. I like it, I think it's worth a standing O. What kind of equipment did you use and how much post processing?

Thank you everybody for the comments.

    It's a Canon PowerShot G2 ... Set to Automatic
The camera get a lot of the credit on this one.

Only post production was just some cropping and then reducing the size so it didn't require so much memory.

Here's the pre-cropped version ... (also reduced in size)

Great shot. I agree with everyone that it looks like a set up shot.

So ... is "Set Up" a good or bad thing here?
    It sounds 'forced'.

This is my first venture into *ahem* "serious" photography.
I'm loving any and all feed-back.

"Set Up" isn't a good or bad thing, its juts a description. Set Up photography is just as legit as any other.

    Re: Grackle in the Mist

Welcome to the forum. The original image has some appeal because of the mood created by the mist. The main issue here is the bird is hidden behind the plants and not prominent enough. I would crop this image from the left a bit to eliminate the tree trunk in the upper left corner.
Having now seen your original image, I will say that this is a very extreme crop and you should try to get the image as close to the ideal framing as you can in camera without having to crop so much. Nothing wrong with cropping, but this will significantly reduce the potential for using the image where high resolution and print size may be desired.
I look forward to seeing more of your work
