    Standing Lenticular Clouds

I was in Pomona, Ca., over the weekend for an aviation event. The weather turned for the worse on Saturday with a huge cold front coming in from the north. These two pictures are text book examples of Standing Lenticular Clouds, which mean very high winds. An aviators sign to STAY AWAY. The mountains in the background are approximately 9,000 so the clouds are 10,000+. Thought I would share these classic cloud images.

    Re: Standing Lenticular Clouds

I can't decide which one I like better, CF. I like the first one because the clouds actually mimic the mountains in shape, but I like the shapes of the clouds themselves better in the 2nd one. I like the contrasts better in the first one.
    Pretty neat looking clouds.

    Emily/Trog:

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I don't know if Lenticular Clouds are unique to mountainous areas but I see them on occasion. These were outstanding representations and couldn't miss the opportunity to take a few shots.

    Thanks again.

Mt. Rainier gets those frequently. Look like its wearing a hat or a flying saucer has landed on top. Saw one last week but midday and too bright for decent shot.

Sounds like the very same thing. I would be interested in seeing a shot like that if you ever get the chance.

    Re: Standing Lenticular Clouds

lol....Its on my to do list but for at least two weeks it won't be possible to even see the mountain unless you're standing on it and even then it might be hard.

    Frog,

Is that due to seasonal storms passing through the area?
