First Tubes test shots

I have had my tubes for a couple weeks now, but I haven't played with them at all, until today. I have a glass door on the front of my house, and every morning it's covered in frost. I figured it would make a good subject to test the tubes.

The tubes are deffinetly going to take some practice, that's for sure. I played with some different combinations of the tubes, on my 100mm f/2.8 macro, and my 50mm f/1.8. This shot was taken with the 50mm, and all three tubes, shot at 1/200 @ f/5, hand held, and underexposed by 2/3.

The sun is actually coming up behind me, and the light in glow in the photo is the reflection of the sun from a church window across the street.

In that case, it is a good example of the effects of putting a lot of extension that I mentioned in the other thread. The center is sharp with edge softness which is evident even stopped down. Definitely something to keep in mind.

Thanks Loupey. Is it possible that some of that edge softness is do to DOF on this image? This image was taken at a slight angle to the window, so the area on ther edges of the frame, are at a slightly different distance than the area in the center of the frame.

That's what I was thinking. I've started to use my DOF preview button more often to make sure I'm getting this effect or not.

This looks like a nature shot on an alien planet. Abstract is right! Cool!

i agree with this too ... I posted some shots in the 50mm war thread at work that i had the camera stationary and took pics of a chain at an angle starting at 1.8 and worked the stops up from there ... at 1.8 I was getting the same effect .. sharp in the center and blurred around the edges ...

View your images at high magnification (~200%) at the top center and bottom center of your frame. You'll see that sharpness still falls off from center, just not to the extent as to the sides.

Normal lenses aren't corrected for field of flatness to the degree that dedicated macros are designed for. Usually not really important unless you're copying documents. But something to keep in mind if you like placing the main subject way off-center.
