D50 glitch or something I'm doing?

So I've had my D50 for about 7 months now and I love it. One thing that kind of annoys me is when I am shooting it automatically goes to ISO 1600. I always shoot at ISO 200 or 400 if possible. This doesn't happen all of the time and it does seem to happen less often. Today I noticed my finger slipped in between shots and the next thing I knew I was at ISO1600 and my pictures had more noise than a Slayer concert The ISO auto in the menu is off. Is this just me or is anyone else experiencing this as well? I usually catch it right away but today I did not and I took about 4 shots totally unaware that the ISO was at 1600. I wasn't shooting anything important so it was no big deal today. I don't want this to happen on our big trip to New Zealand in a couple of months. Thanks in advance.

What shooting mode were you in? If you accidentally slip it out of P/S/A/M modes, for which Auto ISO applies, and into one of the regular auto/vari program modes, it will vary ISO as necessary

Lately I've been using S & A with my larger lens which I leave on most of the time to capture bird shots etc.

I'll just put it out there- it is fairly easy to knock the dial a bit and not notice, or have it move in your bag etc. If you open an untouched file in Nikon Capture, Nikon View, or PictureProject it should tell you what mode it was shot in.
