    Re: Downtown in B&W

Wow, sort of a confusing scene! A lot happening that is.. But interesting.

I find the foreground sprinklers pretty dominating. I think I might have tried to get closer and get them so that their arc would be *above* the buildings (from that angle). Hindsight always wins. The B&W has a strange middle range feel to it. Maybe it's the clouds and sky? There doesnt seem to be a lot of contrast here, but that's not nec bad... it just seems to be so "even." Hmm.. I guess it's a mystery.

Btw, it sort of reminds me of a futuristic 50's b&w movie... Fahrenheit 451? But I think that was color.

Hewlett Packard in a 2005 study showed that colour held visual attention 82% longer than black and white.

I would like to see the colour version.

    John,

I think I agree with Ron in that this would be better in colour just to make the water stand out more from the buildings and to add interest to the picture.

I like the color one so far, but maybe try an infra-red conversion. lots of color to work with so you could probably get a little funky with it too if you wanted.

Getting "funky" is not something that comes natural to me in photoshop. I consider myself to be a documentation photographer. It is my aim to capture the truth of a subject, so that it is preserved to be remembered and enjoyed once it is gone. This is not to say that I am not at all artistic, quite to the contrary actually. However, that side of me usually comes through with my candid portraiture.

So. I took this term "funky" and I tried to think of what things fit it, and after a bit I started to think of a painting I saw of the skyline of Jax from many years ago. It had a sort of lazy impressionistic feel to it, so without trying to simply emulate it, I just used it as a sort of inspiration to make my image look more like an impressionist style painting.

    Here it is...

    now that I like!

you do funky good. the 1st shot was exactly what you were going for - documentary.

the last one is a great interpretation of many factors and it works (for me anyways!)

    thanks for taking the time!

    Thanks!

Do you think that is the kind of thing that a resturant or business owner would want to hang in their lobby?

That would be a good one for a resturant owner, but of the three I like the first. Good contrast too. The sky makes the shoot. Nice work..

I like the first one the most. The water in the color version just doesnt look right. The edited "funky" one is pretty sweet too.

I changed my mind B&W and the painting rocks (as americans would put it).

The colour one #2 is much, much, more marketable to a business owner. The complimentary shades of blue, the contrast and the water give it a unique feel and would draw the visual attention in a building.

I like it--especially the one in color. Is that "Friendship Fountain?" I haven't been there in many years, and some of those buildings are unfamiliar.

Well... I graduated from HS in Jacksonville (N.B.Forrest), and my son was born there, but I moved (back) to OK in 1976.

for sure. put a border/frame around it, add some text like "Friendship Fountain, Jacksonville, FL" and you have a pretty marketable piece I think.

    thanks again,
