Faint black dots in the veiw finder.

    Hey guys,

havent been on in a while so i hope everyone had a good new years.

anyways I have to go to take pictures tomorrow at a car show for a photo essay so i was decided to take few pictures today to practice a little on my shots since i havent touched my camera for about 5 days! However when i looked into the veiw finder i saw about 5 small faint black dots in different locations. i took a few shots and none of the dots came out in the pictures, so i figured that it was probably dust, which was kinda weird since i keep my camera in a hard case with a cover. I went to wolf camera to see if they can do a cleaning or something and they salesman told me that they would have to ship it to a place since my camera is under manufacture warranty. "WTF" im thinking cause i figured this should be a really simple thing to do but i just dont have the materials needed and i didnt want to mess anything up since i never dont this before. Does anyone have any suggestions? i would just deal with it bu ti get a little worried because i really dont think dust shoudl be in there.

Please help me out cause i want to get this fixed before tomorrows shoot.

    thanks in advance.

If you can see the dust in the VF but it's not on the images, it's most likely on the focusing screen. This is very common, and very anoying. If you have a bulb blower, you should be able to blow it off. I have heard that the focusing screens are easy to scratch so I wouldn't use a brush, just a little plast of air.

if it doesn't show up in the photos, don't worry about it. If it does, shoot in RAW and check your menu for "Dust Off Ref Photo" and use Nikon Capture 4 or Nikon Capture NX and it will remove the dust. Your manual will tell you what to do... if you don't have Capture or NX, get the free trial off the CD or Nikon's site.

If it doesn't show up in your images I wouldn't worry about it either. It happens from time to time, and it's not really a problem unless there's maybe a big piece right on an AF sensor spot (just a thought, never heard of a problem with that). Don't use canned compressed air like the stuff for cleaning computer keyboards, try something like a Giottos Rocket Air Blower. It could be on the focusing screen or the mirror (which can easily scratch - don't touch it).

I HATE it when that happens! It is SO annoying.

Ive had it before, and it's usually on the focusing screen, but I have had dust on the mirror as well. Just deal with it for now, but get an air blower. It will save you a lot of aggravation.
