Nikon Primes 28 v 50 RE Bokeh

Hi Everyone,

Posted on the wrong thread previously.

Looking for a good prime, bokeh important as will be for environmental portraits and wedding portaits.

Anyone have any preference between at 28mm 2.8 and a 50 1.8 - both Nikon...

I personally like the AF50 1.8 Nikkor. I love the clarity,bokeh. It can be tricky to focus.It seems to hunt a bit in low light. Manual focus is used at that point. Also,The quality images are proof enough for me.A great lense at a great price $90.00.

If you're using it on a film camera, the 85 f1.4 is the classic. Bokeh that impresses Leica users and excellent sharpness - but very high price. It's also a little long for use with DSLR's. I have the 50 f1.4 AF (non-D) and the bokeh isn't great. I've seen samples from the f1.8 version and it's better. For < $100, it's worth a shot anyway!

An f1.8 lens will autofocus very well in low light versus a slower (f2.8, f4) lens. The lens speed and the autofocus system in the camera are the variables. Since f1.8 is very fast, it gathers a lot more light than a slow lens so it can focus quicker. I used to shoot weddings, and when my 28-105 f3.5-4.5 couldn't AF at all, my 50 and 85 f1.4 wouldn't let me down.

Haven't used their 28 prime so I can't comment but I remember the 20mm AF-D and the 24mm AIS being fairly good in this respect.
