    Shapes, Colors, & Patterns

Like many of you, I took my family to the zoo today.

Light was great in the morning. I decided I was not going to take a single full image of any single specimen so that I can focus on just looking for the basics.

    All with the 300mm-on-a-stick.

    Some more.

Traditionally, I like to go wider than closer to show the environment that the subject is in. So these are quite different for me. In addition, the feather "abstracts" are a completely foreign style all together. I like looking at them but I'm not sure that they are communicating anything - definitely not the same thing that is going on in my head

Let me know what you think.

For me, the hand on the bars shot is a great one.

The chimp hand and flamingo are by far the strongest

I agree and would include the white feathers (I like the lighting).

    That flamingo.... wow

Love it Loupey. I have to do the opposite of you, and challenge myself to shoot wider. I will agree that while the feather "abstracts" are nicely done, they aren't doing anything for me.

    IS IT MARCH YET?!?

    Re: Shapes, Colors, & Patterns

Thanks for looking and commenting everyone! This was my first outing with the new 30D with the 300mm. Shot some of these at "crazy" ISOs - the abstract purple feathers at iso1250! (at least that's what I think it was - still having trouble remembering 1/3 stop values - used to using only full stop ISOs )

Many of these were shot through glass (Bonobo, cat, elephant, horns) so processing out the color shift and adding back the contrast loss was a pain in th butt.

    Thanks again.

Knight, you are too kind. I'm just thrilled when other people get thrilled about their own photographic evolution

Last ones. OK that last one does show 95% of the entire pallat cat - but I can't resist human interaction shots when they appear Shot from way back in the corner with the 300mm.

    Re: Shapes, Colors, & Patterns

I haven't been over here much since taking on the gallery moderator task. Sorry about that I'm missing out on some great images. The flamingo caught my eye on the gallery and had to come over and see all the images in this thread. They are amazing Loupey. These sure make my trip to the zoo earlier this year pale in comparison. Wonderful group of images, thanks for sharing and being such a great member of the PR community of photographers.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

I love them all Loupey - that first one nearly made me fall off my chair! Spectacular!

Think I'll have to make a trip to the zoo soon and try out my new Sigma 80-200 2.8.

    Re: Shapes, Colors, & Patterns

Diane, Larry, and Obie - thanks but your comments are too kind. I'm happy that I was able to render our co-inhabitants in their glory.

But really, some of these subjects are within arms reach (literally). And you know I had my extension tubes in one pocket and my 2x teleconverter in my other Only the white feathers of the crane was shot farther away than it appears - from about 35' down into pit exhibit with the 300mm + 2x TC.

On the other hand, the flamingo shot was close - very close. From the fence, I could be as close as 8'. This shot was with the 300 + 2x from about 12'.

Here is a tight crop of the same image. I know there are many thread discussions about the inadequancies of teleconverters in other forums here. I just smile.

    Thanks again everyone!
