To me this bird looks more like the prairie race of Merlin. Notice the facial pattern and the pattern on the bottom of the tail. I agree that this bird is a female.
While it looks very close to prairie falcon, it does not have the mustache that all prairie and peregrine falcons have. This is indeed a female prairie race of merlin.

Ok this is the ID im giving this one Loggerhead Shrike , this is a rare bird for my neck of the woods they were all but extinct from the Outaouais valley , no nesting couples have been seen since 1996. Seven were raised in captivite at the McGill U in Ottawa and released in the summer of 2005 im figuring this may be one of them
It`s not a very good capture Sigma 400mm with a Tamron X2 Handheld but its the best i could get , it kept mooving every time i made a step forward lol
Now i figure Paul is gonna tell me that it`s a Northern Shrike hehe but i hope not lol

On beak length alone it's a northern(not to mention the belly and side color). I Have seen one post breeding wonderer loggerhead in NJ(found it myself 2 miles from home) and one northern wintering because I don't chase sighted rarities too much.

ISO 200, f/3.7, 1/80 handheld @ 735mm!!! This is a 100% crop of a 7 mp image, which means I was easily 200 feet away.
conditions were TERRIBLE for photography, was getting dark and was very overcast to start with...then I hear this guy calling as he flies over graceland cemetary in downtown chicago...see him land in a tree, have just enough time to get the camera out, turn it on, put the teleconverter on, adjust my settings, and get three shots off - then he flies off to a dinner that he had stashed on a roof, just out of sight. bummer, but now I know where to start looking for him again :-)

The Shelduck was at a large zoo pond. I think they were wild, though. I have seen Blue-Winged Teals, Green-Winged Teals, Wood Ducks, Coots, and Moorhens in there with the exhibit ducks.
