Weathered Charm ( Old Revere Sugar Factory)

This is a telephoto shot of the Revere sugar plant that is in the bg of my Mute Swan in RedHook picture. I liked the various dilapidated panels, windows textures, etc.
Do you feel the inclusion of the piece of door/window at the bottom works?
I rather liked the overall comp, but would like your comments/suggestions on it.
    Thanks

As I scroll back and forth, I think that it would stand on its on without the window at the bottom.IMO. I took some pictures very similar to this just this morning at the old plant where I took the smoke stack pictures.

Beautiful image Gary. Yes; I feel the bottom panel is a great asset and especially so because you have choosen to include a part of it only.
Without the bottom piece we would have had a sort of usual/normal window composition and it adds another beautiful colour.
But the winner here really is the selection of incredibly subtle variations of colours and the haphazard arrangment making for a great overall composition. Each window is so different from its neighbour.
Proof that beauty is everywhere, and it's only a matter of noticing it.

    Gary,

Colors, patterns, asymmetry, line, shadow, this has a lot of finely captured elements that work together very well. I like the lower window as a finishing touch. This is a very strong image that has a strong formal abstraction quality to it.

The lower window abuts the frame unlike the other two windows, yet I don't believe that detracts from the photography the more I look at this. The simple frame works and may be the only point that I could see any need for change.

    Fine work.

Keep it like it is. The mix of lines and patterns is very well executed. The color rendition is simply brilliant. The lighting and contrast are superb. I don't know what you have done here in terms of post processing but I feel that you raised the bar again. This is a classical Gary scene yet there is something more than usual in terms of instant visual impact.

Very nice! Leave it as it is, the bottom window/door definitely adds to the photo.

I like the lower window as my eyes think they're done looking but find out they're wrong.

Re: Weathered Charm ( Old Revere Sugar Factory)

Greg . . .thanks. I do feel the two upper windows could stand on their own, only because they are so interesting and colors so pleasing. I did feel the inclusion of the part of the lower window added an almost abstract aesthetic to the whole comp and a sort of refined chaos. Thanks for your time to comment. I hope you post some shots of your shoot from the smoke stack place.

Tom . . . you know, your description of "haphazard arrangement" and "beauty is everywhere" really hits home. It's just as I feel, and it's good to hear someone confirm my hopes for this picture. Thanks always for your good, insightful critique/comments

Tuna . . .To read comments by you basically giving the thumbs up is like a refreshing breeze blowing in through the window . . .I can sit back and take a deep breathe of relief, somehow. Thanks

drg . . ."formal abstraction" well put. That is what I felt when i decided to compose it this way. I felt it looked like an abstraction, in a refined sort of way. The two windows alone bothered me when looking at it in the viewfinder. I felt like an even number was wrong for this "uneven" subject. Finishing touch as you stated was what I hoped it would add. thanks for your points and comments.

Seb . . As you know, your opinion is always valued highly by me. I'm happy to know you feel it works this way. As for post-processing, just a bit of dodging and burnoing here and there, but I did completely black out the area above the upper left roofing edge, as it was lit a bit and I felt distracted from the subjects. Funny you should say it is a "Gary scene".
When i was on this shoot, I kept thinking about your past pictures of doors, windows building fronts etc. and wondering if I might have been inspired by you to capture this in the first place. thanks again, Seb

EOS three . . Glad to know you feel it works as is.thanks for adding your confirmation.

Frog . . .yeah, I feel it gives the eyes a little more to roam and stay on the picture longer, without being too busy to repel someone. glad to know your take on it. thanks

Thanks all for your time to comment.

Just print it - Excellent as always. What really appeals to me is how the crosses on the bottom door window align with the rest of the photo.

    Really well spotted and captured.

Thank you, Roger. I just printed it out on some new paper ( Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl) and it looks very good. A fine art paper with a slightly glossy sheen. Very impressive. (expensive as well)

Well, now that you are a Mod we, your fellows, will have to rip on your photos. You know, to maintain the proper appearance of objectivity...

Ok, seriously, this is a great image, but I think it would be better in the framework of a series. On its own it's nice, but lacking any sort of context that could bring it a lot of meaning.

On its own I like the muted colors and the changing angles of the surfaces.

Chew away, Almo. You know I can take it. I agree this would be stronger in a series, which is what I'm looking to put together eventually. Thanks for lending me your time and thoughts.

I think I have respectfully disagree a bit here Gary
INMHO this does not need a series to look better as it stands proudly on it's own too feet. It will look beautiful in any environment and It also, I feel, needs no context as such.
