Usually a Nikon guy, but I have a Canon question.

I'm dead set on Nikon, but then thought that I should really investigate a Canon. Since I essentially know nothing of the models can anyone tell me what the Canon equivalent to Nikon's D200 is.

I'd like to perform my due dilligence and research the two side by side.

That's a good question and I'm glad to see you're checking all of your options.

I'm not sure that you can currently compare apples to apples regarding Canon and the Nikon D200. At the moment I refer you to these three cameras: the Canon EOS D30, EOS 1D Mark IIN, and the EOS 5D. Here's a page that lists specs of those three cameras along with the D200:

But like I said, it's not really apples to apples. Canon just introduced a 10-megapixel consumer body, the Digital Rebel XTi. That sensor will likely show up in a prosumer body in early 2007. In the meantime, the 8.5-megapixel 30D is the next step up. The 5D has a full-frame sensor - meaning that it has the same size sensor as a 35mm film frame. The larger pixels will deliver significantly better image quality because they collect cleaner information. The EOS 1D mark IIN is all about speed with the best possible auto focus and a capture rate of 8.5 frames-per-second. Being part of the EOS 1 line, it also has Canon's most professional, weather-sealed body.

Let us know if you have more questions. I won't try to steer you in any direction. Nothing wrong with Nikon or Canon. It's mostly a matter of weighing out the benefits of each system and making the best long-term investment for your needs and desires.

If you're not already committed to a particular lens collection, it is prudent to check out all your options. 18 years ago, I was dead set on either Minolta or Nikon, didn't even consider Canon, but decided to test similar models against each other (Minolta 7000i vs Nikon 8008 vs EOS 630). The Canon was so far ahead of the others in sheer AF performance that it was a no brainer for me. The Nikon and Minolta bodies probably were a bit more accurate in exposure, but nothing that couldn't be compensated for with a little experience with some test rolls. Today it's really more personal preference than performance, as they all perform at very high levels with little difference to really separate them, unlike 18 years ago. Try them out at your friendly local pro shop if you can, bring a laptop and a card reader so you can compare images right there at the store if possible. If the shop is nice enough to let you do that, buy from them. I used to try to support the local shops if I can since they usually provide great service, but where I live now, the closest camera shop is unfortunately the local pawn shop. Nikon is a lens company. The sensors are mainly supplied by Sony. Canon in my opinion has an advantage in the digital market because of thier diverse electronics line-up. Canon makes most if not all of the components in their camers systems. I belive you would be better off going Canon. Huge Quality lens selection and awesome technology.

sadly i would have to agree with u...when i dropped my old Nikon Coolpix in a river and it got ruined i decided to take it apart...turns out it was a Casio with a Nikon lens... but i still like my Nikons lol

My uncle just got the D200. Its a nice camera but he likes how my Canon 20D fits in the hand better and he also likes how the menu controls are set up on the Canon too. I tested his D200 this weekend when I was down visiting, and like my uncle I like how the Canon fits in my hand better. After holding a Nikon DSLR I'm sold on Canon now, the Canon just seems easier to use and more comfortable to hold.

For some time now Canon and Nikon have stopped competing head-on. They just don't make directly comparable cameras any more. Compared with the D200

30D = 8Mpix rather than 10Mpix, poor viewfinder, no weather sealing, probably better high ISO performance, cheaper
5D = 12Mpix rather than 10Mpix, no weather sealing, better high ISO performance, much more expensive, film frame size sensor (Canon would say this was an advantage but I just love my 18-200DX)

The D200 has better flash and focussing (according to tests in the French magazines). But all these cameras produce excellent results that you would have difficulty in telling apart. The best thing is to take each one in your hands and see what you feel comfortable with.
