My First Bee

I have been trying to get a crystal focus on a bee ever since I started posting on thie forum (about 2 - 3 weeks now lol) and today I got the closest I have yet. Shooting at 1/250 in pure sunlight f4.5 this was my result.

The in flight shots we're planned but didn't come out quite as nice as I would've liked. I lost the focus on them each time as I moved to pan with them. The last 2 however I am quite proud of. The only post correction on these was the crop. All of them were shot at 1/360 ISO 400 with my 40 - 150 lens at max zoom and at f5.6. The sun co-operated by staying behind the cloud cover.

The last two are very nice. I haven't tried bees yet. Still trying to figure out how to get the hummingbirds that I see through the window at the flowers - a long sit on the deck?

The first in-flight image appears that the bee hasn't yet entered your preset DOF. In the second image, the bee should be in the DOF but your shutter speed is too slow. Since I don't recommend going higher than ISO 400, I would wait for full sun to shoot at least at 1/750s (preferably 1/1000s).

I like the 4th image the best. The focus and DOF look dead on and I like your composition.

Thanx Loupie. Coming from you that means a lot. I can't give up yet.... I'm just getting some decent shots lol ... so this weeks project for myself it to catch an in flight bee/hornet/butterfly / whetever lands in the garden this time ... and get it right.

I just love bee's though... they're constantly working so there's a constant stream of them in just about every garden. Found an awesome spider web the other day too.. hoping to get the spider to come out and play.. it's on the underside of a very leafy tree... so getting the exposure just right is going to be tricky.

The real enjoyment comes in the attempt. You have a great start here and looks like you had a wonderful time. I love bees and they can be a real challenge. I agree with Loupey that the last one is the best of the lot just like to see it a a little tighter.

These are great attempts you have here! I have never been able to do much better myself on bees in flight !
