    Adjusting SB-600 power using wireless flash

    I've got a question since I'm finally learning how to use my SB-600 flashes wirelessly. I use my D70 onboard flash in commander mode to fire them (I have two SB-600s), and I am wondering if I can adjust the flash output on each flash seperately or not. I'll be using them for portraits and some small product shots until I can afford some strobes. Thanks!

    Hey Gorge,

    Unfortunately, I've not got my manuals with me down here in Mexico. But, I'm not sure if you can with using the D70 as the Commander. I think the D70 only uses Channel 3A (I think ??). If you want to use different levels, you can put banks of flashguns on different channels and then control them with the SB800 as Commander.

    /*----Edit---
    I meant to say that I don't think you can control more than one Channel of flashes with the D70 as the Commander. However, I think the SB800 can control multiple channels when it is the Master.
    ------*/

    If you don't want to use i-ttl, there is a way to manually set different flash output using the SU-4. I've never used it, but there is some discussion here:

    Good luck, and sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Tim

    Re: Adjusting SB-600 power using wireless flash

    I've seen Nikon demo the system and it really looks amazing. I haven't updated my almost ancient equipment so I'm not using it yet - and can't help here...

    Re: Adjusting SB-600 power using wireless flash

    Thanks for the replies! After looking through manuals, and checking out other forums I've come to the realization that I'll probably buy the SB-800 when money allows. I'm debating whether in the next year or two whether to just get a pair of strobes for portraits/product shots, or to get an SB-800 as well as another 600. The more I use the CLS, the more I'm liking it though!

    Re: Adjusting SB-600 power using wireless flash

    I don't believe you can with the D70 either...i've shot with it for over a year and when in remote mode, the SB600s cant be individually controlled.
    You could always get an 800 like you said (which is very useful versus the 600, i've just added one myself) or you may want to try the R1C1 kit...has the small SB-R200 strobes which you can use for fill etc. in portraits, close up lights for product shots, and more...plus the SU-800 which can command your SB600s individually.
    The D200 has a commander mode which you can set power ratios manually or with TTL exposure comp for the built-in and 2 separate groups of speedlights.

    You may also try putting something in front of one of the strobes to diffuse/cut the light being emitted...
