Question EOS Elan 7e function settings

The 7e function 2 (two) controlls whether or not the film is rewound entirely or stops leavaing a short leader outside the cassette. I'm having trouble getting it to respect the selected setting -- to leave the leader outside. Anyone else having similar problems? Function 2 is usually the same for other Canon EOSs' as well. I'm going back to the manual but having lost two rolls of film, I could use some assurance that it is I who's to blame rather than the camera.

Re: EOS Elan 7e function settings

Welcome to the Forums. I have an Elan 7N, and I haven't had any problems with this happening. I haven't run a lot of film thru it yet, but I have played with this particular function and haven't had any problems with it. I just set the Mode dial to C.Fn, then use the Main dial to get to custom function 2. From there I just hit the C.Fn button and it toggles between 0 and 1. Zero rewinds the film all the way, 1 leaves the leader out. Once I get it to where I want it, I just switch the Mode dial back to whatever shooting mode I want to use.

How old is your Elan? Perhaps you need to send it in and have it looked at if this keeps happening. Good luck.

What do you mean by LOST the film? Are you tossing the film simply because the leader is wound inside the canister?

I can't comment on your camera's rewind function, but a small metal "film leader retriever" costs around $8 from a place like Porter's:

It allows you to pull the film leader back out. This is a MUST for any shooter's gear bag, and will pay for itself after you save just one roll...

Re: EOS Elan 7e function settings

I have the elan 7e. I played with that setting when I first got it but I didn't find it useful. I wind the film back into the canister. if you are shooting with multiple rolls and you get your used canister with the leader pulled out with new film there may be some ruined pictures. I prefer to wind them all the way in just in case. And like asylum steve said, just use a leader puller if you need to get at the leader. Usually when loading film for developing I just use a bottle opener to open up the canister and wind it onto the spool.

    Good luck,
    Mike.

Cool Re: EOS Elan 7e function settings

The Custom Functions are only in effect when shooting with the "Creative" exposure modes (P, Av, Tv, M). If you shoot in green box or any of the icon modes the camera ignores all of the custom function settings and uses its own defaults, including rewinding the film completely into the canister.
