And DOWN the stretch they come....

Here are a couple from last weekend trying out a lense I bought recently. It was high noon at the race track in downtown Lexington (generally known as Thoroughbred Park).
Taken with the D70 and a Nikkor 28-70 f2.8 ISO 200. I am interested in your ideas about these. Thanks in advance for taking the time to look and comment.

    Wow! Those are great OT!

What shutter speed did you use to freeze the action like that? And, did you use the dynamic focus mode?

    [big grin],
    Tim

p.s. Sorry. I had to do it....

Nice images OT. In that the subject is "frozen", I would have looked into trying a few unique angles that one cannot do at a race with live horses. For example, a study on the first image, I would have got in tighter and shot with a longer lens to bring in that horse grazing in the field as a contrast in subjects. It would be interesting to lay on my back and shoot angled up here and there too.

Just ideas. May work... May not...
    Cheers,
    Tim

Nice , OldTimer. At looking at the first shot, I thought These sure look like statues. then saw the second shot and thought how the heck did he get that shot! I then realized that these were statues and Oldtimer was in no danger. I like them espaecially the second one. I think these would be interesting in b&w.

    OT,

I like them, but I think it would be neat to experiment those in a silhouette type shot, where they'd be all silhouetted with a sunrise/sunset. Great subject matter,

    Jared

Re: And DOWN the stretch they come....

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. I think you have some good points and if I make it back there I will try them. I had just left the cmaera store on the way to Nashville to see my grandson and drove by this location in downtown Lexington. It was high noon and not the best time for photographs but I did want to try out the 28-70 and the new lens hood I had just bought, so I gave it a whirl. Not the most inovative, but I was kind of hurried and It was in the middle of the city and I had limitied angles to work with to avoid city scape.

Tim I agree with you and I did try a little of that type thing. Here is one example.

    Hey OT,

    That is just great!

As Gary suggests, it may be worth a try in B&W. It'll give your viewer more to ponder. But, I do love the contrast between sky and subject.

    Tim

p.s. I think you should post this over on the Sports page for a giggle...

I think those are great considering the lighting. Did you get that nice blue sky out of the camera or did you have to fix it up?

No the sky was out of the camera. One of the things I liked about these photos. No PS tricks here. I wish I had been at the park at a different time of day. Do you know if the morning light or evening is better there?

No, I don't know. But maybe I'll have to find out.
