This is ridiculous. I have to learn how to post before I can learn how to shoot. Oh,well...


How do you post multiple pictures with space and/or text between? Can you post pictures side by side so as to be seen without scrolling?

OK, this gets a little tricky. To post multiple images with text, etc in between requires you use a web hosting service. I use one called Imageshack ( www.imageshack.com).

Starting a basic account is free, and this will be where you upload images you want to use. When you do, the host will provide you with a series of links that can be used for different purposes.

So I upload an image to Imageshack. I then copy the link I want to use (this will probably take a little trial and error on your part to get the links you want, as there are several options)

Now I'm here at PR typing up a post. When I want to insert an image, I just paste the link into the post. To me, it looks something like this:

(IMG)http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1170/cbpr.jpg(/IMG)

I've used the ( symbols where the actual link would use the [ symbols, but other than that it is an actual link. But what you see when you submit the post is this:



Once you've inserted the link, you simply keep typing. You can insert more links as needed.

A word of warning: Be mindful of your image size when using Imageshack, as it will NOT resize the image for you. The above image is 1200x750 pixels.

I do images side by side by simply creating them as a single file in Photoshop. I'm not sure if you could do it any other way, I've just never tried.

We have an 800 pixel limit in attachments to discourage huge pictures which push parts of the website off the screen, we can't guarantee everyone has the same size monitor!

If you use attachments, then they show up in whatever position the web browser of the viewer can show them. With a 1280x1024 screen that's usually one above the other, but if the other member looking at the site has a wide screen, they might come up in pairs.

There is a solution, but requires you to do some more work.
If you want more control use the picture button in the editor, it asks for the URL of the image, which you can then embed just here you want it.

You can use images from our gallery in that way.
Upload to your member Gallery in its full high resolution glory, then link to a lower resolution version of it.
If you right-click on the image in the Gallery below where it says "Click on photo to view larger image" and copy the Image Location (in Firefox, don't know what the prompt would be in IE) then you get a link to the image, not a link to the gallery webpage.

I've put a few spaces in the HTML so that you can see how it would look in the editor without the website displaying it.

You can go a step further; put a LINK around that so you click on the image and go to the full size one.

try clicking and going to the gallery.

And here, with a few spaces in, is the resulting HTML.

You do that by highlighting the complete IMG link that was there in the editor, and pressing the URL link button, then paste in the address from the address bar at the top of your browser screen when viewing the gallery page.
Up to date browsers that use tabs for multiple pages make it easier to do.

Now you have complete control, and you can put huge images in your gallery as well, so you get comments there as well as in the forums - yet keep the forum image sizes sensible.

P-J enhancement thought:
Could we add a "Link to this from forums" option in the gallery?
That takes the medium size image for display in the forums, and link to the gallery full size when clicked - put it in a textbox so the member can cut-and-paste instead of having to fiddle about with buttons and copy and paste twice?
Maybe even automate the cut, so you click on a button, then go to the forum editor and press paste - now that would be slick!

First part: If you do not want to make them larger than 800 in either direction or 293 KB, it's much easier than that and you do not need to put them elsewhere first.

Use the 'Upload Photos' button as usual to upload the photos.

After you close the upload window, look at the properties of the first photo where the file name is listed above the 'Upload Photos' button (right click>Properties in Internet Explorer). The address in Properties will look something like

"http://forums.photographyreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74400&stc=1&d=1259333055"

Note 'attachmentid=74400'

In your post, put the photo where you want it by typing

[ attach]74400[ /attach]

without the spaces

Leave about 4 spaces (plus text if you like) and do the same for the next image.

[ attach]74401[ /attach] (no spaces)

Note that they will almost always be consecutive numbers unless someone else is uploading at the exact same time as you are. I have never seen this happen.

Also, you can now see them with the ‘Preview Post’ button to make sure you have what you wanted.

I like Flickr simply because you can embed the picture you want with a small image, and if people like it, they can view it in various sizes for more detail. I'm sure all do something like that, but I use flickr.

But if you see the mountain icon in the toolbar above, you click on that and enter the URL of the image. Voila.

OldClicker: Since you did not actually post a side-by-side on this thread, I am assuming you only went to the "preview post" stage, saw that, indeed, the images were side-by-side, and reasonably concluded the "preview" would in fact represent the actual post?? Would you mind posting a comparison on this thread to test your actual results? Sorry to be such a pain........

Everybody else, please feel free to jump in and test your results as well. This thread can serve as the practice field.

It depends entirely on how big your monitor is!
And then how much of the screen you let the browser have.

My monitor is 1920x1200 pixels, so I can set Firefox to use full screen and then the images are side by side.
Usually I don't let it have the full screen, so the pairs of images are one above the other.

You have to understand that the web browser does not reproduce exactly what the original poster might have seen.
Marketing people in particular really need time to get to grips with this, and give up the obsessive desire to control fonts, layout, and positioning, when using HTML in browsers.

If different parts of a web site give different views, like the Preview when in advanced mode, you will see something other uses are very unlikely to see.
Preview uses the full area to the left of the adverts, where forum view has lots of extra controls displaying the user's name, post count etc.
So unlike desktop publishing, What You Get Is What You Get but What You See Is Totally Different - the web is not WYSIWYG !

Makes sense. I can get them to stay side-by-side with a total of 700 pixels with 1280x1024 using IE.

I also tried it at 1024x768 and it worked, though the wide image posted by Medley may have changed the overall width of this thread. 1024x768 wit IE should be a pretty common minimum these days???

For these I just did a quick resize with ThumbsPlus from some already resized jpgs. For real, I would do it in Lightroom or Photoshop from a a file saved in non-lossy format. If I really wanted side by side, I would make an appropriate size canvas in Photoshop and Copy&Paste them both into one image and resize/convert. - TF
